Read what parents are saying about Runyon Elementary SchoolLet me start by saying that everyone’s experience is different, so please understand this review is solely based on personal experience. 1. Lack of parent and staff communication. 2. Staff is a priority over parental concerns. 3. Unprofessional and one sided. Incident one, there was a situation between multiple students that was inappropriate for anyone that age, I won’t go into details, but the school brushed it off like it was no big deal & just a fabrication. 2. My daughter was struggling to put her backpack on when I noticed a staff member do absolutely nothing to help her until she realized I was watching her, and then decided she would help. Again, this was how I viewed this situation. 3. I discussed with the principle how a staff member improperly checked my daughter into school and how she handled the situation after, instead of informing me that my daughter needed to walk around. How she spoke to me, felt condescending because I was not aware of the proper process for school check in. Especially, after using this entryway multiple times with no problems. After this incident, this staff member proceeded to call my daughter a “he” when she had on pink attire. Again, this was how I experienced the situation. I decided to call and talk with the principal to talk about my experience, so when I received a callback after she spoke with the staff member, I will just say the voicemail the principal left me was incredibly disappointing! I wish I could share the voice audio here so other moms or dads can understand why I am choosing to leave a review. It would have been great as an educator, for her to be a natural party and have empathy for both people. Instead, she belittled me and made it seem like it was all my daughter and I’s fault for my concerns. In her eyes, due to COVID, the “teachers” could have done no wrong. The voicemail made me feel like she was putting all responsibility on me and expressing that “all the teachers and staff are having a hard time this year”, as if the parents are not. I don’t know if this is fair to say, but I believe COVID has been an adjustment for everyone. My overall experience dealing with Damon Runyon Elementary School has been a huge disappointment. In fact, due to my experience I am considered an “upset person”, her words, not mine. When in actuality, I am a mother who spoke up for her daughter who is too young to know when people are not being kind or treating her with kindness. My daughter’s teacher is amazing!

Posted by a parent on 3/3/2020I have three kids at Runyon who are all very different, and it has been the BEST school for all of them!!! My older son is very high achieving and has always been challenged. My daughter excels in reading and writing but struggles in math, and Runyon has provided the resources she needs in math while continuing to challenge her in reading and writing. My youngest son was a little behind in Kindergarten because his preschool experience was lacking, but they caught him up in no time. The school focuses on character, and they give students the strategies and tools to deal with real life issues and conflicts. I could not be happier with our experience at Runyon. The staff is experienced, caring, and they have created an environment where my children LOVE learning and school. We have not had anything but exceptional teachers at Runyon. In addition, my daughter had an issue with another student who would not leave her alone, and the school handled it perfectly. The principal knows how to handle student issues and bullying, and I feel extremely lucky to have Runyon as our neighborhood school. I wouldn't send my kids anywhere else!!
Posted by a parent on 11/8/2018An amazing school that truly cultivated a learning culture and makes everyone feel successful. Teachers are easily approachable, reaching out, and constantly looking out for every individual child. Friendships are encouraged and positive behavior noted. All students academic needs are met and given a safe place to shine.
Posted by a community member on 8/7/2018Terrible principal. Thank goodness there was a different principal when my son was there. Unfortunately, he had her as a teacher and although he is in his 20's now, he still remembers the unpleasant experience of having her as an instructor. And few if any of the other teachers are much better. The good ones retired many years ago. Fortunately we had nothing but very good experiences at both Euclid and Heritage.

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe only spent one year at this school but I have to say it has been fantastic! My son with an IEP was treated just like the rest of his peers, everyone loved him and treated him with such kindness! No bullies or anything, in fact he had handfuls of friends who looked past his disability and treated him like a friend! All the teachers here are extremely supportive and helpful. They make sure all of the students are getting treated fairly and they make fun creative ways to teach! Everyone there has been so thoughtful and amazing to my son, I couldn’t appreciate and think of a better staff, group of kids, or overall good school! 10/10!Parent Review9mo ago - Moody Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageRun, don’t walk, away from this middle school, especially if your child is gifted and/or has learning disabilities like dyslexia. This school will put your child behind their peers at local public schools especially in math. They say all of the right words on the tour about advancement, however when push comes to shove, they are unwilling to consider anything outside of grade level for most students. For example, there are two sixth grade math classes - regular and honors (for gifted students). They use the same textbooks at the same pace, the gifted class just has way more work. My child had already completed sixth grade math, when I asked about getting him placed into the 7/8 accelerated class they told me they had only promoted a handful of students ever, then told me they needed to collect their own “data” and that process would take months to a year. So my child would have basically wasted a year. The gt coordinator views herself as a gatekeeper for the program and does not value input, even from other teachers and schools. There is a rigid list of requirements (things like a 98% in the current class which is ridiculous. If your child misses one question on one test this is blown. It might as well be 100%). At other schools in the area, 8th graders commonly take geometry and even algebra 2. The highest level your child will be able to easily complete at this school without a fight is algebra 1. This puts a gt kid in a state of catch up to their peers upon entering high school. We also had problems with the punitive nature of the school. They make you sign a behavior contract and spell out “violations”. Things like forgetting to charge their Chromebook at night will earn your child a level 1 violation and three or so of those will result in a detention. This gave my good kiddo so much anxiety that they would wake up in the middle of the night to check their Chromebook. They are ignoring decades of child development and behavior research. We had other problems: there is a seriously lack of diversity, my child was included on some group texts with some racist content. There was more meanness than you see at most other schools. There is a lot (hours and hours) of homework, most of which was not value-add. I really have a hard time finding anything redeeming about this school. The sports were ok, but even that had issues, you’d think sports in middle school would be no cut so kids could try new things, but even the sports were a source of anxiety.Parent Review3mo ago - Mackintosh Academy

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have two girls at Mack, one in K and one who has been there since K and is now in 4th. We love the school, the nurturing, the support, the friendliness and openness of the teachers. We haven’t experienced ever any bullying, Mack fosters a sweet community of friends and addresses conflict as a learning opportunity. My older child has told me every year that “this years teachers are my absolute favorite”. My youngest loves going to school every morning and has the kindest and sweetest K teacher who is extremely prepared and understands little’ kids need movement, calm down time and a variety of hands-on stimulation to supplement their learning.A good friend is an educator and she just took a specialist job at Mack after working in several Boulder private school. Her summary was that Mack is the best of the bunch, very informed on the research-backed growth mindset etc and actually putting money into teacher training in learning approaches, well-informed on supporting learning differences and challenges. I have friends with 2E kids and their kids are thriving. The campus is amazing, the staff top notch and the community is warm. Of course every school has issues I personally think Spanish could be better, of course even more resources would be welcomes for even more individualized support, but I’ll take it because the school is fantastic and my kids are happy.Parent Review6mo ago - St Mary Littleton
