As a member of the Cortez community, a father of five, and a teacher, I would say that Montezuma-Cortez High School is a strong school, working hard with limited resources. The administration may not appear to care when you are a student who is in trouble, and they have to be disciplinarians, but they do genuinely care about the students. Any one of the principals will go out of their way to help a student who asks and who is willing to work to achieve. The staff works very hard, as well, supporting students who are coming in at well below the state averages in reading, writing, and math, and they problem-solve, and work tirelessly to find ways to help students be successful. In addition, the school's career and technical education offerings are top-notch, offering courses in Fire Science, Emergency Services, Ag Technology, Catering, Technical Theatre, Film Making, Jewelry Making, and Computer Science to name a few. The high school band is a state champion ensemble for more years than I can count. The sports teams work very hard, and the coaches are very dedicated to not only improving students' athleticism, but also developing students of character. A high school will give a student what a student puts into it. Montezuma-Cortez High School has its shortcomings, but a student who attends this school can be highly successful if they try.

I have two children attending this school, I am actively trying to find an alternative. This is the worst school I have ever seen. The staff are thugs, or burnt out. No one cares. Spoke with the counselor about my son having issues in the math class he was in, and they recommended he drop out and just get his GED, "it's just easier for all of us when students do that". At a parent teacher conference I saw the test results for my sons class on reading levels, only two were at grade level or higher. Most were not even at the junior high level. Home school or go to Delores!!

I'm currently a student at MCHS and the teachers are definitely not the problem. I've had great teachers in every class, every year. The issue is the students that don't care about their education, the students that constantly ditch and never participate or pay attention when they actually are in class. Everybody needs to stop bad mouthing the teachers. They get paid horribly and then are expected to teach not only academic stuff but also things like manners and respect. The students here are just so awful, their parents don't care so neither do they. Don't get me wrong, there are good kids at the school but the bad ones just bring everyone else down with them.

I am a student at the school and the students seem to not care as do the teachers. But not all of the teachers dont care. And building a new school would be beneficial But the main problem Is the staff.

Montezuma Cortez High School could definitely use a makeover on staff. When I went to school there it seemed teachers didn't expect much from the students and paid little attention to the minority students. Building a new school is not going to fix the problems of the high school but having teachers that care would improve the school.
