Read what parents are saying about St John S Elementary SchoolI love this school! My kids are happy to go to school! I can tell that they feel good about being there, they are confident in what they're learning, and they're excelling academically. The kids in their classes are super nice. When we first came they were really friendly and wanted to be friends with my son right away. I've seen the same with each new student who has joined their classes. The teachers do a good job of helping them work out issues in ways that expand their character (not just "be nice", but how and why). The principal (Ms. I.) is a stunning educator and has a ton of vision for the school. The kids absolutely love her. I've really enjoyed getting to know the parent community with opportunities to volunteer together. With transitional kindergarten to eighth grade in the school, families form a very sweet long-term community. Such a great pocket inside our large city. I was worried initially about the age range at the school (older kids with my little ones), but it's turned out to be a great benefit. The older kids' leadership and service training includes how to think about and care for the younger. Such an amazing gift for each age. I'm very happy with this school right now and I think it's heading in a great direction under its current leadership.Regarding education - I've really appreciated the differentiated learning the school employs. I have kids with challenges and who are academicly advanced. I've seen the teachers in each of their grades over the years help them loves the things they're good at, and really support their learning in the areas where they struggle. The teachers in every grade/subject provide free afterschool tutoring, which also helps with completing homework.
Posted by a parent on 4/16/2021Wonderful, my children are happy, healthy and learning.
Posted by a parent on 6/12/2018We have had our son at St. John's for the 4th year now. He started in the kindergarten class I must say; I could not feel happier with the Faculty, Staff and parents. His teachers have been very warm, comforting and welcoming; what more can you ask for. My child has learned a lot in these four years at St. John's. I love the administration staff, principal, and their means of communication. They have everything we need, extended care and various sports he can choose from. He has great friends that I know will be with him a lifetime. I could not complain and couldn't be happier with the deciding this school for my child's education.
Posted by a parent on 10/23/2017Great catholic school. Sister Shirley and Sister Lillian are the foundation and strength of the school where community really matters. Excellency in academic and a well rounded education including arts and sports. Highly recommended.
Posted by a parent on 5/12/2017The current administration cares about the students and the community of St John's. Both my children have excelled and love learning which I contribute to great teachers.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter is a 5th grader at Glen Park and we have had a wonderful experience. My daughter loves learning and going to school and has had excellent teachers and one good teacher out of her six years there. Many teachers have been there for a long time, and some even went to school at GP themselves. The principal, Ms. Zarr, and PTO are doing a great job, and I don't have anything bad to say. The community is strong and supportive, and we all weathered the pandemic together even though it was difficult. The students, educators, and staff are diverse, and equity is paramount. You are not asked for money constantly, and all activities and lunch are free. The PTO does a great job supporting teachers, staff, parents, and kids with a back-to-school BBQ, fall festival, Halloween dance, teacher events and gifts, and many other activities throughout the year, which are all free for students and often include dinner. The on-site aftercare program is fun, comfortable, affordable (it is subsidized by the PTO), and if they ever come close to capacity, they hire more teachers so nobody is turned away. It was started by parents at the school over 20 years ago. Around 80% of the students go to aftercare so it is a seamless transition, and my kid loves going there. They have clubs on Friday they choose for a few months at a time including Rock Band with the vice principal, Mr. Michaels, and Mr. Jairo; cooking; robotics; arts & crafts; garden with the gardening teacher; martial arts; etc. I am so grateful my kid has gotten to go to school there and loves going to school.Parent Review8mo ago - Serra (Junipero) Elementary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageA small, close-knit school with a talented, dedicated teaching staff and an active PTA. A great place to learn for my daughter in a caring environment that reflects the diversity of the surrounding neighborhood.Parent Review1y ago - Miraloma Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have been part of the Miraloma community for 5 years now. We have felt proud and lucky to be part of such a supportive, warm, and friendly community. Our children have thrived at Miraloma and love going to school. The neighborhood is awesome and the children feel very connected to each other and to staff.Parent Review5mo ago - Mission Education Center

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAfter a horrible experience at another school for Kindergarten, we decided to move our child to Monroe for 1st grade. It has been a wild success. Our son went from regularly thinking of himself as a troublemaker and describing himself as stupid at his old school to performing well above grade level academically (in reading and math) and socially integrating within one semester to his new environment. He's even started to take on a mentorship role with some of his classmates with their schoolwork. What he really needed wasn't a more rigorous disciplinary regime, but an environment that encouraged his creativity and curiosity, a place where his energy is treated as more of an asset than a problem. It's been a great experience so far.Note: this is a review for a multiracial, already-bilingual child in the Spanish immersion program.Parent Review1y ago - San Francisco Community Alternative School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is honestly horrible, My daughter has been going to SFC since kindergarten, it was an amazing school at first but this new principale has changes on everything and the lunch lady likes to put her hands on my daughter and other students. The security guard is very disrespectful with students, I am working on moving my daughter to a better school, she gets bullied and comes home really upset and sometimes even crying, because the teachers give her a hard time, or because the students at this school bully her. I am so done with this school honestly I am moving my daughter out of the school and she will not be back. Please for the sake of your childs well being, dont put them in this school. And not only that but this school is extremley understaffed. The math teacher for middle schoolers is the history teacher, she doesnt know what shes doing and I want to provide my daughter a great education, so therefore I am taking her out of SFC. If you want your child to have a good education, please please I beg of you, dont bring them to sfc. This is the last place I want my daughter to be.Parent Review2mo ago - Sunnyside Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child was mercilessly bullied and this was hardly noticed by staff, in our few years here we saw allot of teachers and coach jam leave, some of this came with budget cuts but some is just the changing culture of a “rising school”. The individualism of families in million dollar homes driving German cars and switching their kids out to private is very evident, this is a magnet school for lower performing zip codes and a parking lot for its own zip code, parents openly talk about getting out of public before jr high, we found that our kid (though getting good grades) was way below his grade level at private. Though sunnyside won’t admit how many kids should be repeating grades due to learning loss, the entrance tests tell a different story.Rough kids are never disciplined, the school social worker has them signing contracts for behavior that don’t hold any weight. We had reports of open threats of violence at least weekly. Stuff that would be a felony for an adult is glazed over with a “restorative conversation” among 7 year olds. It will help if you play soccer, have your kid wear shin guards all day as kicking is a common salutation among peers. I felt like I needed to deprogram my son from the casual violence in this school. Kids are constantly telling each other to “shut up” or worse and the bullying is out of control particularly after returning to in person. As this is one of the better SFUSD schools they get some good teachers (we were there k-3) but they don’t stay, I don’t think the new principal is bad, I think the school was a mess when she stepped in. I think there are a handful of involved parents willing to do the uncomfortable work a mixed income school needs and allot of checked-out parents who shuttle their kids from this free option to a screen. The school adjusts to the non existent attention span of techies children with busy work, there is little room for collaborative work or individual growth in a school this size, moving to private we see longer projects and more collaboration but we are also repeating a grade by moving our child as the school will not hold kids with obvious delays back. We were constantly told our son was “doing fine” when he’s a full year behind. This was a working class neighborhood school. Today this is majority single income homes with a few diversity hires, it actually reminded me of my first Silicon Valley job in the early aughts, utopian but an unstable environment with a revolving doorParent Review1y ago
