Washington Irving Mid School Math Music and Engr Magnet

Love love love this school. We're on our last year, in 8th, and only with they had a High School so we could stay with them. Highly recommend!

The very best school in our community. I wish they could extend their services and become a High School as well.

My son is finishing his eighth grade year. He had a spot at King in the Environmental Science Program with friends, but he chose Irving instead. He has had a great experience. Learned so much and couldn't be happier. He was attracted to the robotics program which goes beyond the intro level and has a competitive team. I think he also liked the smaller student body size. There was about 750 students when he started in 6th grade. There is a huge selection of electives, film production, art/graphic design, animation, video game design & computer programming using Minecraft and other programs, band, dance (with a great dance team), Spanish dual language program, and a strong engineering department. The math dept in particular is really strong. Its rigorous but not just for the high-achieving students. They support the students no matter what their previous background in math, to make sure they are mastering the skills. There's free math tutoring sessions available to the students afterschool and on Saturdays online if they need them. They don't bring much homework home at all, in all their classes, save for the expectation to read outside of class. As long as they use the time in their extended class time they don't need to bring the work home. The block system lets them focus on 4 classes a day. The teachers overall are down-to-earth, caring and engaging. Props to the principal Mr. Roskam for attracting great teaching staff who share his ideals in supporting the students in innovative ways that appeal to the kids. Not load them up with busy work. It's been a great transition for us from elementary school to gearing up for high school. They also have a great turf field where my son can play soccer everyday during his lunch period. For him, Irving was the perfect fit. He never had any complaints or stories about bullying or feeling unsafe.

I feel safe here and I feel like the teachers really care about me. Besides the regular classes that they make you take, I can choose an elective like Minecraft, band, cinema, or robotics. I'm sure there are other choice too, I just can't think of them now.

Irving is the worst school, math makes no sense and they give too much homework to the students.
