St. Cyril of Jerusalem Elementary School

St Cyril is a wonderful find. Our daughters adore the school, and as parents, we are equally impressed! The community is warm and active, offering a variety of after-school enrichment programs and monthly cultural events. Our children are thriving socially and emotionally here - despite being in a top public school district, we have made the choice to send our kiddos to SCJ! Aldi just the right balance of homework and strong academic curriculum!

St. Cyril’s is an excellent school with a very strong community of students, faculty and parents. I have a third grader and kindergartener and each have about 15 or so kids in their class with a teacher and TA. The community is small enough that almost every teacher and staff member (preschool thru eighth grade) knows my children by name. For a small school, there is no shortage of activities. As part of the regular curriculum, my kids weekly attend phys ed, art, music, Spanish, and technology. Starting in third, they have science lab (in addition to regular science). There are so many after school activities to choose from: Gardening Club, CodeRev, Art Club, Mad Science, Knitting Club, TheatreWorks, Mock Trial, Public Speaking, Orchestra, Drums lessons, etc (these are only the clubs I could think of off the top of my head. There are more). Then there are all the sports teams which generally start with grades slightly older than my kids. However, swim team starts very young and is very popular at the school. In addition, the school does field trips throughout the year (my kinder is going to the pumpkin patch shortly), cultural diversity presentations (upcoming is a performance of Aztec dancers), and we have begun this year to incorporate presentations on topics around environmental stewardship, to name a few. Lastly, St. Cyril’s has many community events throughout the year that allow parents to socialize and get to know one another. My kids can’t wait to get to school in the morning and don’t want to leave when I pick them up.

It is a great school community. Everyone is very proactive in creating a great school experience for all families. Teachers provide higher level thinking and inclusivity for all to the best of their ability.

St Cyril is a hidden gem! My kids have been here for 6 years now, and I can honestly say that it is a wonderful place focused on the betterment of the child. The teachers and staff are amazing, some truly extraordinary beings that actually care about your kids. My kids are happy and thriving in this small and personal space. You gain an entire new family when joining the St Cyril community!

Choosing St. Cyril of Jerusalem was the best decision we have ever made for our kids. My older son was really struggling at the local LAUSD school. His friends were constantly siphoned off to magnet programs while he remained behind, struggling with reading and math skills. He hated going to school, was extremely anxious about all the testing and refused to try and learn how to read. We moved him at the start of fourth grade. The class size was small and he received amazing individualized attention from the teacher and staff. The kids and families were so welcoming that my son started to want to stay after school to join the sports and after school activities just so he could be on campus longer and see his friends. We moved my younger son there later that same year. Both kids are thriving from an excellent academic program. My oldest is now in the Middle School program and benefiting from outstanding teaching in all areas, but especially his writing skills which at 7th grade I feel are on par with that of a Freshman in high school. The small class sizes and close community of the school have helped both my kids benefit from having older kids to look to up to and model themselves after as well as acting as role models for the younger kids whom they both enjoying mentoring and seeing around the campus. Some kids do not do well in a small school learning environment and if that's true of your child this might not be the place for them, but for those struggling with being just a number in a crowd of thousands of kids - St. Cyril of Jerusalem is a truly wonderful find!
