Our experience thus far has been very good. We're happy with the teachers and how far our son has come academically this first year and I look forward to the years to come.

Very good. We have been happy with the teachers and administration for all 4 years we have been there.

Overland is our neighborhood school. When our first child started there, we were ecstatic. The teachers were amazing, the staff was wonderful and back then, the principal was moderately good. After being there for 8 years and volunteering our time in every capacity, we have seen the decline of this school, mostly if not completely due to the ineffective leadership of the principal. She does not work with the best interest of the students in mind. She works within her own best interest. It's unfortunate as this school could be amazing. It has great teachers, a wonderful parent community that is willing to donate their time and money. The booster club raises nearly $500,000 per year to fund art, music, science, library, class size reduction teachers. I mean, what public school raises that kind of money. But unfortunately, even with all of that, due to the principal's ineffective and detrimental leadership, the school has taken a downward turn and it's going down fast. It's too bad. Between the principal and LAUSD, we've since decided to move our children to private schools and we couldn't be happier with our decision.

I preface this review with the fact that we know many families who love the school. There are lots of parent volunteers and a hefty slush fund to augment art, science, computer lab and library. But sometimes its not what happens in good times that is most telling. Its when the going gets tough, how is it handled? Is there good communication? Is school administration right there to help? Are they proactive to protect and benefit the children? Unfortunately, Overland has failed our child on a multitude of levels. Our child was habitually bullied - pushed, spit on, called "dumb" and "loser" and "stupid" and this school has not shown us a zero tolerance for bullying. As far as we can tell, its just a time out and then tolerated. Our child's teacher resigned half way through the year, and the principal stuffed a letter into the bottom of the kids' backpacks to communicate it. We were not informed what (if anything) they had told our children, or what exactly was said to them. Interestingly they emailed us at least 20 times in September and October asking for an $1100 donation to the school (which we did pay)...it was (still is) a constant rotation of substitutes and parents are left overhearing information, or getting drips and drabs. To add insult to injury our child gets a TON of screen time at school. He comes home and tells me about various shows on youtube (we're a youtube free family but not at Overland Elem) on a regular basis. I've seen the teacher put on phonics videos, videos where they are essentially reading a book (instead of reading them an actual book).

Leadership: Principal does not address parents concerns and blames the parent for anyone "retaliating." She interacts very little with parents and students only on big days or visits from visitors. Her approach to "motivate" students is to punish them if they do not adhere to her suggestions. Teachers: There is very little use of technology in the classroom. Some rely on the textbook to do the teaching. Some also lack the basics such as email and websites. Some play favorites and target your child if he or she cannot grasp concepts easily. Please research other choices. The school needs to go through some drastic changes before it gets better.
