Lafayette Elementary is like the beginnings of a promising food forest. It’s nowhere near its potential, because growth in some areas takes time. The school relies heavily on parent involvement (parents are watering the garden). The counselor pulls the weeds. But there are many areas where the weeds have taken over and we need 3-4 counselors for the heavy workload. Children do well here because there’s a real sense of “community”. If we see every child like our own (and not as a competitor which sadly is the nature of this country) then we become willing to activate our schools as community centers designed by the community for the community. A space where real education, empathy, and compassion take place. Your children and my children are in this world together. It is our responsibility as parents to become truly our child’s first teacher (you decide what seeds you want to plant) and hold schools, staff, and teachers accountable for planting the seeds of real education and compassion. In hopes that school staff are efficient at pulling the weeds. Parents do a lot of talking with our students (the counseling and teaching) at home. And that’s why resources for parents by the school and the school district are important. Parents need support. If you work full time and cannot volunteer your time, make time to ask questions. Make time for after work hour involvement. Children grow fast! How they grow is up to you (us). Don’t expect your child to be at grade level or proficient in reading, writing or math if you drop your child off at Lafayette for Kindergarten, then pick them up at 5th grade graduation without never having read to them, talked to them or participated in any school event! Parents, you decide how successful you want this school to be. Parents with education and resources (who live in the neighborhood) often choose other schools because they don’t think the school is “good enough” for their petunias. But research shows that students (without that advantage) in the classroom do better when peers (with educated parents) learn along side them.It’s not about competition. It’s about cooperation. And community building. For the success of our children and our community.

I know that every parent has their own opinions and experiences, but in all honesty in my experience this is the best Elementary School both my kids could have gone to. It starts with the teachers which my little ones and I love so much, in my opinion and experience with challenges and experiences I have had with my little ones at the school, all the teachers I have come across are so caring, loving and respectful to the students. You can tell they love what they do and most of them go above and beyond to make students feel welcome and cares for. Example: my son was struggling with staying at school starting in first grade, it wasn't because anything was happening at school, but because my son was struggling academically, the school counselor, vice principal, teachers have all been amazing in supporting my son, as a parent I was lost, but I knew exactly what I needed to do as my son's kindergarten teacher was the first one to observe that my son may have ADHD and as he's teacher not a professional specialist, she just wanted me to keep and eye on the signs and if I saw my son struggling more, she told me to please get him evaluated for ADHD. It was because of her initial observation that I was then later in first grade as my we all saw my son struggling I knew exactly what to do to start the process. Right after that observation and up until now my son and my daughter have received nothing but amazing support from the teachers, the principal Mrs. Gamboa is amazing, her role as a principal is very unique, fun, caring and loving and you can tell she loves what she does, she's always happy , bubbly, participates with our children and the parents, is kind , humble , loving and caring, Mrs. Gobas the school counselor is also amazing she is also very caring, loving, humble, kind and you can tell she cares so much about the students, the teachers , omg the teachers are amazing as well, as far as what I have seeing we all have good days and bad days none of us are perfect and we all have things we need to work on, so not every parent may not agree with me on this review, however I speaking on behalf of my children and myself from the experiences we have had, the connections we have made and the observations we have seeing and to us the teachers are amazing, I can name a few Mr. H , Mr. Duran, Mrs. Gonzales, Mrs. Mannu, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Perrucio, Dr. Harrimis, Mr. Perez, Mrs. Jaimeson, Mrs. Funke and I have so many more, but I don't have space anymore..

I must note that more needs to be done about falsifying information by the upper management. Transparency and honesty are essential for trust, and currently, that trust is being undermined.Overall, Signal Hill Elementary School has significant room for improvement across multiple areas, and addressing these issues should be a top priority for the administration Signal Hill Elementary has potential, significant improvements are needed across multiple areas to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.

The experience I have is through my child’s eyes she was going to this school from kindergarten until being transferred almost at the end of 5th grade . My child was frustrated not being heard being labeled as basically a troubled child who wasn’t smart enough . Of course those words never came out of any staffs mouths only harsh actions shown . Maybe all parties involved were frustrated but after several meetings where my child was only looked at as behavioral and nothing more I guess she exhausted everyone’s efforts at this particular school . My child got transferred to another school and is doing amazing . It’s wonderful what a fresh start, new environment can do .

I enjoyed going to this school as a child. I suffered from Dyslexia and ADHD. I was at St. Joseph Private Elementary as doing poorly do to not being able to read and write correctly. My mom Alicia Attardo enrolled me into this school because they were able to greatly improve my vision and ability to read and write. I remember working through powerful magnifying lenses. My o did not start and stop at the top and would be an incomplete circle when I would draw an O or 0. I was also a bus captain and yes I took the short bus to school. I stayed back a grade because I missed too much school. Fast forward I left the school with better than normal vision 20-15 I am the founder and CEO of two successful companies and working being a thought leader, coach, speaker, seminar leader and trainer. Thank you to my mom and Huntington Academy for giving me the opportunity to excel in life at an early age.
