Read what parents are saying about Shu Ren International SchoolOur kid has been going to Shu Ren for a few years and she loves it. The teachers are caring, the kids are great, and our daughter comes home every day with a big smile on her face. Plus it's cool to see that she now able to understand and speak Mandarin.
Posted by a parent on 11/14/2023My son has been at Shu Ren since Pre-K 4. The education has deteriorated under new leadership since private equity bought the school. I highly discourage parents to choose Shu Ren if they do not speak Mandarin at home with their children. The school is still a safe place and celebrates Chinese culture. These are the best parts of the school. My son has always received marks of “meeting” or “exceeding” expectations on all report cards and prepress reports. Despite this, he was one of two 4th grade students to be forced to study Mandarin with 3rd graders this year. The school gave an exam to determine this placement with no warning about the high stakes character of the test. According to his teacher, my son is advanced in oral expression and comprehension. He is not as advanced at writing which is why he was held back. I spoke to the administrator in charge of mandarin curriculum about all of this. I explained that I was concerned my son would not be challenged in the oral aspects of the language and asked how we could support him with additional tutors and instruction. I also made it clear that my son’s confidence was impacted by being held back and that it was a strong preference he stay with his cohort. I explained how Mandarin instruction drove the decision to attend the school and how it was disappointing that they never informed us about his writing struggle on report cards. The administrator’s response was unprofessional and insulting. She never tried to understand my concern or perspective. She just kept repeating that 3rd graders and the other 4th graders spoke more mandarin at home and not to worry, my son was in fact learning a 4th grade curriculum with the third graders. It was simply a case of the other 4th graders being advanced and they would be learning a 5th grade curriculum. Shu Ren creates its own curriculum for Mandarin and can assign any grade level to whatever they choose, so this explanation was disingenuous. Please make sure your child speaks Mandarin at home. My son was in the school for 5 years and one day he was magically behind and being kept back without any warning. My valid concerns were met indignantly and disrespectfully. My son will not be returning to Shu Ren next year. If Mandarin instruction is your primary motivator in choosing Shu Ren and you don’t speak the language at home, I strongly urge you to choose another school.
Posted by a parent on 4/3/2023This is the first year in seven years our kids won't be going to Shu Ren, having recently graduated. We started there (ages ago!) in kinder and 1st grade, respectively.Being at Shu Ren has been one of the most transformational and memorable events in our lives. Neither my wife nor I are Chinese, but we wanted the children to have a strong foundation in a foreign language and thought Chinese was a good one for them to be well versed in. Well, after years of being an involved parent there, I can say that we're glad about the decision we made. We also got much more from Shu Ren than we expected. We came for the Chinese but stayed for the IB. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Shu Ren has been so amazing that i can't begin to state its praises. We never thought such a well rounded education was possible in the elementary years, and IB and Shu Ren have exceeded our expectations. On top of the amazing education, the staff and parents have made Shu Ren all that much more special. From Jie and Tony--the founders--to Rebecca, the current head of school, to the parents, everyone is special and wonderful. We've made life-long friends through the school and parent community and are so lucky to have had the school as a part of our lives.Every once in a while you have to make a decision you're not sure about--whether it's worth it or whether it'll pay dividends. Sending our kids to Shu Ren was not such a decision. Sending our kids to Shu Ren was an investment, and one that's paid us back (and hopefully will reward society) multi-fold. We couldn't have made a better decision.
Posted by a parent on 9/7/2020My child has been at Shu Ren for over 6 years and she loves it. She enjoys going to school. She is never "bored". With well over a dozen or more field trips and classroom workshops per school year, there is always something exciting going on at school.
Posted by a parent on 12/6/2017We have been so pleased with the teachers, administration and IB curriculum. We are a non-Chinese speaking family and weren t sure how to measure progress. Much to our delight, my son passed a Mandarin fluency exam at age 4 thanks to his tremendous learning experiences from Shu Ren. The IB curriculum has made the boys very curious and they can constantly link ideas and concepts because of this global style of learning. The teachers are warm, compassionate and knowledgeable and have helped my sons become more confident. Initially they would never speak out in class and are now able to raise their hands and feel comfortable speaking in front of the class. I love how the teachers teach the kids the skills necessary to solve problems rather than solving problems for them. I remember seeing my son struggle with a puzzle and instead of stepping in to solve in, they helped give him tips so he could solve it himself. We are so fortunate that the social, emotional, language and interdisciplinary subject skills the boys are learning at Shu Ren have given them such a strong foundation that will provide them with so many options in the years to come.

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI had two kids in this school. One of them was severely traumatized, the other one fared better but was also not really happy. They have ZERO help for kids during recess. When there is a fight kids are told off, when there is bullying they rather victim blame than helping the child. The principal is old fashioned and loves teachers that yell at and punish kids. Group punishments? Great! Shaming a kid as punishment? Yes!The school has a few fantastic teachers but it doesn't make up for the rest.Parent Review2y ago - Washington Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWashington is an excellent school academically and offers tons of enrichment classes like science, gardening, art, music, and library each week. What's so special about the school is that it has the strongest community out of any of the other Berkeley public schools. Each teacher is skilled and cares about the wellbeing of the children. It also has an amazing playground with its own forest. If your child gets into Washington, consider yourself lucky!Parent Review8mo ago - The Crowden School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur child is in their fourth year at The Crowden School, and it has been a great fit for our family. Crowden plays such an important role in our child’s life that it’s difficult to summarize for people who might not be familiar with the school. But here are the main things that we love about TCS:1) The music. Students at all levels of experience — even beginners — work with highly skilled professional musicians who are passionate about music and music education. The first two hours of each day are devoted to music: a rotating schedule of technique, orchestra, ensemble, and musicianship classes. The students perform regularly in groups (chamber orchestras and ensembles), and the whole school community cheers on their efforts. The love for music is pervasive, and creating music in small ensembles makes it more cooperative and less competitive.2) The teachers. The music, academic, and enrichment teachers whom we have encountered have been almost uniformly excellent: engaging, enthusiastic, caring, and knowledgeable. The small class size provides lots of time for individual attention, and no one gets left behind. We’re amazed by the thought and care that goes into planning each class — even the PE and art classes follow detailed syllabi. The academics are challenging but not overwhelming, and we’re confident that our child will be well prepared for high school.3) The students. Even before the pandemic, the number of students in each class was not larger than 15. The students all know everyone at the school, and no one gets lost in the crowd. It often feels more like a very large family than a school. With few exceptions, the kids we’ve encountered at TCS have been kind, enthusiastic, and supportive. They all seem to love reading, too, and it's a joy to see the students recommend and share favorite books just for fun.Our child enjoys going to school, delights in their classmates, loves playing and listening to challenging music, and is excited about their academic classes. We had high hopes for TCS, and the school has exceeded our expectations. We’re certain that it has been the best possible middle school experience for our child, and we recommend it without hesitation.Parent Review1y ago - The Berkeley School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI cannot speak highly enough about The Berkeley School. We are so happy with our decision to send our son to this magical place-- for children and families alike. The moment we stepped on campus, we knew we were surrounded by warmth, care, and learning opportunities. The teachers at The Berkeley School are nothing short of phenomenal. Their love for what they do is palpable, and it's evident in every interaction with the students. They provide a nurturing environment where every child is seen, supported, and known--and the school's mission is woven into every learning opportunity, every day. It's heartwarming to witness the genuine connections they form with each student. The first year our son attended, he woke up every morning yelling, "Is it a school day? Do I get to see my teachers?!"The classroom environments are huge and they are enchanting. They're designed to be both fun and engaging, stimulating a child's curiosity and love for learning. It's clear how much thought and care goes into creating spaces where children can thrive and explore. We use the extended day program and it's a game-changer for our household. They offer a seamless transition for the kiddos and a blend of play, learning, and rest, ensuring that children have a well-rounded experience. We appreciate that the school supports working parents while also providing the kids with additional opportunities for growth and development. The sense of community is so comforting. Families come together to support one another. There's a network that extends beyond the classroom and we do fun things together--with and without the kiddos. There's no hesitation in our minds that our child will continue on with The Berkeley School next year at the K through 8 campus. The hope of seeing my child through 8th grade, surrounded by the same level of dedication and care, the same beautiful, open, and large spaces, the same personal attention, the same commitment to guiding our child towards being as sharp, bright, articulate, self-confident, engaging, and civic minded, fills me with confidence.Parent Review7mo ago - Berkwood Hedge

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNew family at BH last year and we have found it to be an AMAZING environment for learning and community. The teachers care so much about the kids and are so attentive and dynamic. They have expanded the library and added a tinkering lab which our child loves so far. Forest Day is a highlight as well - Our kids are thriving.Parent Review1y ago - Walden Center And School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe absolutely love Walden! Our neurodiverse (autistic and ADHD), non-binary 9 year old started here in 3rd grade. They have been welcomed with open arms and hearts. The school community supports them (and us) as we learn about our child's different emotional, social and academic needs. Our child absolutely loves the diverse art curriculum of drama, fine arts, music and Spanish. They take wonderful field trips, have lots of time to move around outside and the afterschool program is FABULOUS! There's a lovely, committed community of families who arrange camping trips, bring together families with neurodiverse members and contribute to the school in beautiful ways, like volunteering. The school is very pro-justice focused, so our kids are deeply immersed in this content.Parent Review1mo ago
