We’ve had such a wonderful experience at this school! The teachers are kind, patient, and truly understanding of each child’s needs. The principal is caring, approachable, and clearly dedicated to creating a supportive learning environment. The curriculum is well-structured and engaging, with a strong focus on academics while still allowing children to enjoy learning.Our child is genuinely happy here—excited to go to school each day, which says so much about the positive atmosphere. The school balances strong academics with a nurturing environment, helping students grow both academically and personally. It’s also located in a very nice, safe area, which gives us extra peace of mind.We feel very grateful to be part of this school community and highly recommend it to other families looking for a strong, caring, and well-rounded elementary school.

My daughter has attended for 4 grades. She's had excellent teachers that have been very aware of her strengths and growth areas. They've all been very invested in growing the kids and supporting them in the ways they need.From the issues I've observed with other kids (managing behavior problems, emotional support for kids whose parents have divorced, etc) I've been super impressed with how the staff handles issues to get to good outcomes.

I agree that Sumac’s 50/50 Spanish–English immersion model is often not enough to achieve true Spanish fluency without outside support. That said, this is true of most foreign language programs. Language acquisition requires structure, consistency, and dedication beyond the classroom. Families choose Sumac for Spanish immersion, not for advanced STEM, and some parent complaints seem to overlook that. If a family’s priority is accelerated math or science, a magnet program or supplemental coursework is a more appropriate option.My main concern with Sumac is not the language model, but the academic culture shaped by leadership. While there are some genuinely excellent and dedicated teachers, the overall approach appears to discourage differentiation. Academically strong students are often kept at an average level rather than being challenged through enrichment or individualized assignments. This creates an environment where uniformity is prioritized over growth.Having two children makes this contrast especially clear. One attended a school outside of LVUSD and is confident, academically engaged, and appropriately challenged. My other child, who is actually stronger in math and science, is rarely recognized or challenged. Instead, there are frequent reprimands, including in Spanish, despite a lack of structural support, clear expectations, instructional notes, or consistent communication from teachers. I do not receive feedback directly. I only learn of these issues through my child and remarks made in class.This is particularly disappointing because the potential is there. Sumac works well for ESL students and for families who already speak Spanish at home. However, for native English speakers, especially academically advanced students, the lack of differentiation, limited transparency, and inconsistent support significantly limit progress. My concern is not with individual teachers, but with a system that values leveling students over helping them excel.Sumac may be a good fit for some families, but parents should enter with realistic expectations. Spanish exposure is the program’s strength. Academic acceleration, STEM focus, and individualized challenge are not.

My child attended Willow for one year, and went from being an outgoing, excited, and happy person to be around to regressing to the opposite in all of these areas. Having seen the education system work in three different states, our experience in California and at Willow was a definite low point in my child’s elementary education experience. There is unchecked exclusion by other students that is deemed as ‘deserved’ and presented as a learning experience by the adults you entrust to protect your children. The teachers and staff are, at a minimum, complicit in bullying behavior by allowing students to dictate a social hierarchy and social punishments at the ages of six and seven years old. The environment is cliquey for the students and parents, and if your child is the child of staff or someone involved on the PTA board, they are protected at the expense of a perceived less important child. The teacher had nothing good to say about my child in conferences and was not receptive to attempts at communication, though was noted to be communicative with parents who were previously known and beloved members of the school community. We were told my child was behind in math and just ‘not understanding’ the material. This was surprising to us because we knew that they were very good with numbers and math and it just didn’t make sense. My child is now operating a year ahead in mathematics and the district we are in can accommodate for different learning speeds and styles in a way that Willow was just not equipped to do. If I did it all over again, we would have homeschooled or attended Sumac for the year we lived in the area.

My son is in TK this year and has grown so much! He absolutely loves his teacher and his friends and he can’t wait to go to school every day. He is in a warm, loving environment which has been perfect for his first year in elementary school. He has also grown so much academically. We love YB and the YB teachers/staff!
