The moment you step into the building, the vice principal is out to get every student. It creates an uncomfortable feeling for any student who attends the school. I have seen these "administration" make their students cry. Especially the vice principal. It is best to stay out of her way because she is the wicked witch of the school. Bringing students down for every little thing. It gives her power, obviously. Did I mention how rude the staff are ?

Unfortunately I have seen the issues within the special needs program titled "transitional room" to be ignored, and allowed to continue. It's more than neglectful, on part of the PUSD, but sad to see sensatve students traumatized.

Positives: -Many clubs and sports -Still a few good teachers -10 AP classes offered -Exposure to real everyday people (you want your child to experience this, don't put them into an ivory tower (tiger moms I am looking at you)) -Chance for a real high school experience Negatives: -Far too many lazy and incompetent teachers (99% is busywork, yes, even for "AP" classes) -No money (the review on the song "Friday" being repeated over again is no lie) -Unclean facilities -Class size (Over 50 students in one small room is common) -Planning/guidance for college is literally nonexistent and even counterproductive at times -Drugs and physical intimacy are everywhere -Inflexible administration If your goal is a fantastic university, you best be prepared to teach yourself quantum mechanics, write an orchestra, and single-handedly save a dying village. Why? Well, because PHS will actually fight against you to keep you with the policy "no child left behind." They will NEVER promote/nurture a child looking to further their knowledge or go beyond. If your goal is a simple day job, learn to write a resume and hold an interview now, because PHS sure won't teach you how.

I have one child in this school. He had some minor behavioral issues in his previous school but not here. He has matured so much at PHS. The Principal, Mrs. Hillig, is very fair. I know several incidents where she dealt with situations with understanding for the students and not in any way trying to "get" students or ruin their lives as another review suggested in the past. The sports program is awesome. There are endless activities and programs for students to choose. One particular thing they do here is offer a free period during which students may go to their clubs or activities every Friday. But if a student is missing work in any class or has a low grade they must use that time to make it up or attend remediation. It is a very intelligent built in motivator for students to take initiative and keep their grades up. I have been extremely impressed with PHS. I wish that programs weren't so costly, but at least all the payments made for the programs are tax deductable and entirely refundable.
