Westar Elementary School

Our child attended this school from kindergarten through the middle of first grade. During that time, he became fearful of going to school because of ongoing bullying issues. Students in first grade were reportedly being “pantsed” regularly, and our child was called “weird” and “dumb” because he had a 504 plan, which raised concerns for us about student privacy and school culture surrounding accommodations.We also experienced a serious medication safety issue in which our child was accidentally double dosed by an office administrator without consulting the school nurse first.We ultimately transferred our child to Westar Elementary School, and the difference has been night and day. Our son now loves school, has experienced zero bullying issues, and is performing above average academically in a supportive environment.

I previously worked at a school for 5 years (not in the Liberty district), and I had certain expectations for this school when I enrolled my son. I have not been satisfied with what I've experienced in the last 3 months. The office is a mess, the bulletin boards are ripped and haven't been fixed in a long time, it seems. There should be a way to represent and show what the school is about. I did not recognize the principal as she was dressed not professionally ( wearing casual and gym attire). In the 10 minutes I was there in the office, the principal was yelling at a student loud enough for the entire office to hear, not respecting the student's dignity, and not being confidential. The office people are lousy and not approachable. When I called to excuse my son's absence, they answered the phone yawning and just asked for the name (no teacher name, grade, or reason). As my son's name is not the only one in the entire school. They need to improve or replace admin.
