As a lesbian student with adhd and anxiety this is a horrid school. I have been bullied, attacked, sexually assaulted, and put through stress. I ask for help and they pile more work on me. There have been Bomb threats, Shooting threats, and people threatening to hurt themselves or others. The dress code is UNFAIR 1st the dress code is made by a MAN which kinda creeps me out but no matter what i wear i will get bullied or have a boy say something sexual to me. Everyone time i come home i cry my mental health is the worst then its ever been DONT PUT UR KIDS THROUGH THIS

This school is not welcoming at all, and this is coming from a student here of 3 years. All the parents say it's great, but they don't know what its really like. The teachers do not care. Most of them can't teach, or feel empathy. They care more about dress code than anything. getting harassed or bullied? They arn't gonna do anything. the kids that get in the most trouble end up being the favorites. There isn't a day any student goes with getting yelled at for doing nothing wrong. More than 3 tardies every 9 weeks? ISD. Dress coded more than 3 times? ISD. No pda, which is understandable because it is middle school but nobody is even aloud to hold hands. extremely sexist, homophobic, and racist. You don't meet the criteria of being popular? You're most likely gonna get bullied. Hewitt Trussville Middle School is simply the most unwelcoming school I have ever been to. I count down everyday I get closer to leaving. Save your kids mental health, and put them into this school, it's just about killed me.

I felt a severe lack of leadership opportunities while at this school, especially during my final year. The teachers and organization leaders clearly all favor the popular students versus more qualified and competent students that actually want change and are willing to take action to do so. The Student Council is a joke, our President is a terrible example for upcoming students and lazes about. The NJHS group at our school did three activities and that was it. Nothing else, nothing of the grand talks of “change and community service” all because of our leadership teams. The teachers have the audacity to complain about a lack of action and then immediately turn around and choose students who only chose to join the leadership roles because they could care less. Its infuriating, especially when you’re basically no one if you’re not white, popular, rich, or athletic. There is a smattering of good teachers, but otherwise they focus more on the dress code and how they can send a girl to the front office for her pants or sleeves or whatever for being “way too short” when the boy right next to her is practically wearing the same thing than actually teaching something that will prepare us for HS and beyond. Not to mention the racial prejudice and literal ignorance that comes from students to POC. Actual issues that occur to students are either played down or largely ignored by staff, and teachers may as well not care if you’re not, once again, popular enough. The only highlight that I can say are the extracurriculars. Band and Choir at HTMS are rather successful, and I was able to do many fun thing and learn much through these things.

Went to this middle school and was lowkey miserable. Being a non white, female, non het student was difficult.First the teachers 100% have favorites and if aren’t one of their favorites they will pass you by as if you aren’t even in their class. Not to say that every teacher in that school is terrible there are the rare amazing teachers at the school, but the teachers are either amazing or terrible there’s no in between. But not all of the blame can go onto the teachers the admin don’t really care and the curriculum the teachers have been given suck. Social-emotional support is non existing. The closest you can get in the school is a Google doc they send out like every month asking you how your mental health has been, but nothing is really done with that. The school seems to blame most of the students problems on “their phones” while offering no help with any actual problems.Racism, sexism, classism, fat phobia, and homophobia runs rapid in this school. If you are not a popular, white, skinny, rich/suburban, cishet guy you will without a doubt hear nasty things about you and about people like you. And the school doesn’t really do much about it. The school may even victim blame you if you were to try and report something. Some of the worst stuff doesn’t even come from kids it comes from teachers. A teacher can call you a slur, can judge your body in PE, make stereotypical sayings about your race, favorite the white people over you, and so much more. Also don’t get me started about how the school cares more about what girls wear while the boys are vandalizing the bathrooms. And while all of these things happen in school the parents know none of it. I see all these parents making great reviews about the school, but I can bet you that these parents either have a white, cishet, boy or the kids haven’t told them anything that happens at school. The only saving grace I had at the school was their arts programs. They were also the only things that made me sad to leave. The arts program at this school is much better then most and the teachers are some of the best I’ve had. The only thing is the school as a whole definitely looks down on people in the arts. Because if it’s not about sports it doesn’t matter to them. So arts and individuality aren’t really a thing that the school fosters in the kid’s. Overall the school has no respect for the children, their education, their mental and physical well-being, and excelling them for the future.

We came from a private Catholic school and were worried about the transition. However HTMS has been wonderful at communicating with parents and my son has really excelled since transferring. Amazing facility, professional staff, and we couldn't be happier!
