We withdrew my daughter yesterday- just so that you don't think we are 'disgruntled' my daughter was ranked 2nd in her class of 123. The district refused to follow federal laws- keeping her out of another district school for a month because they didn't 'like' that she was homeschooled- bringing up her age repeatedly during the enrollment process. After getting into BTW she continued to have issues with enrollment. The state had to intervene 2X to get the district to comply. She was not provided services that she needed to catch up with the 15 weeks worth of back work- constantly having unrealistic deadlines put on her (completing 18 weeks worth of work in a month for multiple classes- on top of current work) Teachers were not empathic to her situation. District was putting too much stress on both student and teachers. After 15 MONTHS I finally gave up fighting them. When we withdrew, my daughter had completed the majority of her current and back work, and had As in all of the classes that she had completed. The only classes she did not have As in were the two classes, because she was still trying to complete back work. She repeatedly asked them for a private tutor to help her handle her workload, and they ignored her pleas for help. After threatening to withdraw her, they pretended to be helping, by offering the same 'help' that wasn't working. When I realized that they were just bidding time, I withdrew her. My daughter skipped 2 grades (in PS/other states- scored in the 90% of all of her standardized tests- yet the district questioned her abilities repeatedly. Never apologizing for keeping her out of school/in the wrong grade. They victim blame and point fingers. #MckinneyVentoAct Don't be fooled by these schools rankings. It is the STUDENTS that are doing the work, they hand pick high scoring students. All students should have access to these opportunities. Don't pick a school by its ranking. My daughter thought her failing school was just as good - the only difference was the curriculum, which she can get at home. And that is what she will be doing.

My daughter attended BTW for 4 years and it was an exceptional experience. The leadership is outstanding and the teachers are as well. The student's talent is almost unbelievable. The quality of this school and preparation for college is that of a private prepatory school. I will forever be grateful for the educational and nuturing experience that she experienced at BTW. If you ever have a chance to attend a Showcase, you must go. Thank you to all the staff at BTW--the office, counselors, teachers and principal Q. Starks.

My 11th grade child decided to leave a private school to attend BTW because of all the great things we have read and heard about this school. We havent been impressed yet since she started. She didnt receive her schedule until the middle of the first day. She learned when trying to get her schedule that she was not in the schools system. Thats funny because she was accepted 6 months ago. After receiving her schedule my daughter was placed in classes that she had already taken and was in the class with 9 & 10th graders. I am currently trying to get her schedule changed and its the 6th day of school. Never experience anything like this. Really think need better office staff and leadership.

BTW is a solid school with some cliques. The school does well considering the lack of funding for public education in Alabama overall and Montgomery, specifically. Sadly, the once vibrant law magnet has become an afterthought and the students in this program are treated like second-class citizens by the majority of the "art-focused" students and faculty. Law magnet students are often excluded and their accomplishments are never celebrated. I can recommend the school, but not the law magnet given its current status--the intent seems to be to cancel the program while keeping the current students on the rolls and wasting 1.5 hours a day with filler work.
