I had heard some negative things in the past but have seen nothing to back them up. The new(ish) principal, Ms. Dendurent, is really wonderful. She is hands-on, available and really supports her staff. I am so happy to be able to send my son to this school. He is thriving.Posted by a parent on 9/25/2016

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have loved this Homer school for my 3 kids, two of whom are still attending. We transferred in mid-year from homeschooling three years ago and it was a good transition. My son with special needs has had comprehensive evaluations offered and support provided. The team includes the parents in all decisions. Teachers have been utterly amazing at dealing with different needs of kids in the classes. Two of mine are also identified as gifted. Even without a gifted program for the younger ones, the teachers have been able to provide extra challenges as needed to keep my kiddos engaged. By 2nd grade they currently offer pullouts for gifted kids to do some extra stuff. Even the placement of kids with specific teachers has impressed me. The staff knows their strengths and what each child needs. The new principal, Eric Pederson, began about 3 years ago and is AWESOME. He's already been nominated for "LifeChanger of the Year" for 2016/2017. You can see all his praise on that website. Expansive playground, new outdoor classroom, plenty of after school offerings through the PTA, active and organized PTA, swim lessons every year for all grade levels, music, PE, science, new violin program. The classroom teachers have all been respectful of personal/religious differences and supportive of our special diet. They have gone out of their way to see my kids each succeed. I can't think of a single complaint of this school. We have been probably one of the harder families to accomodate, so that says a lot.Parent Review4y ago

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe grading system is number based, not letter or percentage based. While this does promote the amazing "growth mindset" the school is so great about teacher, it is a struggle moving into 7th grade and grasping a different grading system. Overall, this is a WONDERFUL staff who are caring, involved and invested in their students and community!Parent Review3y ago

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am a proud mother of a lil fireweed academy student. When my daughter first started getting the overlay excited jitterbug for her first day of kindergarten I too got quiet jittery. Highley age 6 is very outspoken and I'd say extremely confident in her abilities. I knew with her being so head strong she needed the proper enviorment to grow and learn at her pace in her way. Public School while wonderful holds no candle to this school. Lil Fireweed Academy has a new way of making the public school for the public. The exciting inventive, hands on atmosphere is exactly what my 6 year old needed. What an amazing staff miss kiki, Kim Jon and Deb, I tip my hat to you, for you are by far an amazing group of educators.Parent Review7y ago
