2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI was a part-time Intervention Specialist at Buchtel 2011-2012. The students were extremely bright, but much wasn't expected from them in terms of behavior--no one (with the exception of a few teachers) challenged students' bad behavior. Certain teachers would claim it was the student's "culture" that made them behave the way they did (cursing, use of the "N-word", etc). Those teachers that required "better" got it! Those who didn't - CAOS!!! Also, everything seemed to be focused on TEST SCORES and teaching to the test. I'm hearing good things about Buchtel since they've gone to a new model of education (thanks to then principal Sandra Gordon who is no longer there). And I will say this, by the end of the school year, I came to enjoy the students I had. In the beginning, they were rough!!! But, I came to really like them (and I think most of them liked me too). I feel if as a teacher, if you make the effort to connect with your students and let them know where YOU stand, you will see a change in them. Buchtel students aren't any different than other students at other schools. As a professor once told me, all schools have problems---different schools, different set of problems. Also, quit stereotyping Buchtel students. Most are typical students trying to get an education.Other Review7y ago - Schumacher Academy Elementary School

"Porchrockr is amazing. Happens once a year in August. Highland square is a great area but West Akron is broad area and many of these questions do not apply to the whole area. Highland Square USA unique area and the bars have many events. "

"As transplants from the East Coast, we were trying to decide between Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, and Highland Square. We're so happy we landed here in Highland Square because it's got everything we want without the stuff we don't want. Food, walkability, safety, schools, neighborhood events, etc. So we bought a house --- we're staying! The vibe is everything."

"There are a lot of nice parks in the area and very well maintained. Highland Square Library is great and has a lot to offer as free activities. And the history of the old theater is a great place to watch a family movie with inexpensive concessions! "

"There are a lot of bars on the main strip, but it is safe and not too crazy. The library is great and with a Walgreens on the corner and a Mustard Seed Market you can feel taken care of. Plenty of nice parks as well. "

"Most people are respectful and keep their dogs leashes and clean up after them. Sidewalks make it safer, but some are old and uneven"

"This neighbourhood is great! Well kept houses, safe environment and parks with activities with five minutes walking distance. Home to porch rockr and other festivals. Quiet for being close to downtown, but still close enough you can hear Lock 3 concerts and the St V band play. "

"Highland Square is more distant from the highway than other neighborhoods/areas but that means it feels much homier. Most of the houses around me are older/historic, very quaint, with gardens and people walking dogs all the time. "

"The amazingly low standards the city of Akron places on the homes is astounding. The circuit breakers tripping daily makes it special."
