7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe principal at this school is very strict and not in a good way. Teachers have to ask for permission for everything, it seems like they have no say in how their classrooms are run. My daughter once mentioned to me that she was walking back to class from taking a restroom break and happened to pass up the principal on the way to class, the principal asked her if she had a hall pass, my daughter said yes and showed it to her, the principal then stated, "Yeah, you better have a pass." There's a bootcamp like environment in the school. Kids don't get recess or go on fieldtrips because according to the principal, "It's a waste of time," AND kids aren't allowed to talk during their lunch break or they get yelled at by lunch aides. Now, onto teachers. Most teachers at Darr think that yelling and putting kids down is the best way to discipline the students. I say this with confidence because my kids have experienced this at different grade levels throughout their years at this school. The fifth grade math teacher (2021-2022) belittles the children and thinks it's ok to put the spotlight on the ones struggling with Math in front of the entire class only to embarass them. If a child is failing a class completely, it's either because they don't understand the material at all or have a lot going on at home. Neither reason gives a teacher the right to humiliate a student, not to mention that it's very unprofessional on the teachers part. The worst part of all this, is that there's plenty of other teachers like this at Darr, even office staff. There's just an overall toxic learning environment. There were even allegations of a teacher hitting a child upside the head from another parent. I think that if you don't like children, you probably shouldn't be an educator or principal. It's that simple. It's normal for Darr employees to be rude and belittle children. They also try to be that way with non-english speaking parents. It's just unbelievable that EPISD administration hasn't put a stop to this because I'm sure they have plenty of complaints.Lastly, there are no programs offered. They don't offer Music or Art class. The school building is in desperate need of remodeling. It's very, very outdated. The library has very old books available for kids and looks dirty just because of the old decor and yellowing floors. There is no playground. I definitely do not recommend this school.Parent Review4y ago1 Reviews - Henry B Gonzalez Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son is a third grader at this school. For Easter I baked 19 cupcakes ( one for each student) and delivered the last day of school before the holiday break. To my surprise, the teacher did not give out cupcakes. After receiving a message from her that stated that once the kids left for the holiday, it dawned on her that the cupcakes were actually for the class. Seriously????? How much common sence does a educator have to have to realize that if she received a personalized basket made out to her ( Ms C. Apolinar) and 19 cupcakes, it would all be for her. It gets better. She waited 6 days later to distribute them to students. My son was absent that day so he got his 7 days later. Was that a good move on the teacher? If she had the commen sense a professional should have, this also should of dawned on her. Those are egg and milk based cupcakes. I dare her to leave an egg omelet and cup of milk out for 6 days and then eat it. It is no surprise why this school scored a 4 out of 10. With teachers like this I feel sorry for those students.Parent Review15y ago2 Reviews
