This is a 3rd post as the district actively disputes negative reviews. S.A. Moffett Elementary has experienced a tremendous decline following the leadership change at the end of the 2023–2024 school year. Under former principal Forest Holbrook, the school felt structured, communicative, and at least responsive to families. Since then, multiple serious concerns have gone inadequately addressed by the current principal, Michelle Brady. There have been repeated incidents of bullying reported by families, with responses that feel slow, inconsistent, or dismissive rather than decisive and protective of students.As parents, we've raised concerns about student supervision and boundaries, including situations involving the use of female restrooms by male students without clear communication, policy explanation, or advance notice. These situations were handled poorly and left families feeling excluded from important decisions affecting our kids. Parent input is near zero. The PTA vis crowded with domineering liberal women with a pro-district agenda. If you want to see failure in action, just ask about BFF which is not supported by teachers who prefer a sMost troubling was the 5th-grade off-site science camp. Families were informed that boys and girls would be sharing shower facilities and sleeping quarters, while parents were strictly prohibited from attending or observing. Reasonable questions about privacy, supervision, and student safety were not met with transparency or accommodation.Academically, instruction has been disappointing. Teachers appear disengaged from direct teaching and rely heavily on electronic programs such as ST Math and AR Reading instead of active instruction. In one instance, a teacher stated, “I hate paper,” which reflects an overreliance on screens and a lack of traditional skill-building.Basic mathematical foundations are not being adequately taught, with excessive focus on conceptual approaches while students lack procedural skills. Writing instruction is also weak, with little emphasis on structure, clarity, or effective written communication.Leadership sets the tone for a school, and unfortunately the current administration has failed to provide clarity, accountability, or trust. Communication is reactive, and parent concerns are often minimized rather than addressed. Families considering S.A. Moffett would be best served enrolling in a different district or private school.

I am a student at Sowers. Do not send your kids here!!! The teachers seem more excited to head to the lounge at Lunch than to teach you! Not to mention, a (Karen) teacher lost it when I told her she could not take my personal belongings. The only bright light among the teachers is Mr. Will Johnson, the math teacher. Principal’s also very lame, cares more about his image than promoting safety and discipline. He expelled a student for making an AI-generated post about him, for example! If you’re looking for a school where your kid is going to enjoy learning (learn real topics), this should be the last place to consider unless you want your kid to fail. Go to Dwyer or Ensign instead, they’re far from decent, but still totally better than Sowers!

I was a student at Edison high school in the 1980s. I can’t speak for the school today but when I was a student here we excelled at art, athletics, drama, music, and extracurricular activities. The school is really close to the beach and the kids are healthy because it’s a very athletic and outdoorsy culture despite the fact that it is not as academic and is more sports oriented, my classmates went on to become very successful. This includes one who became a rocket scientist who went to Harvard and is now the vice president of an aerospace company, the valedictorian who went on to become the Superior Court Judge in Orange County, another friend went into County Supervisor politics, a friend runs her father‘s family business and a friend who went all the way to the US sailing team and the Olympics. I became a successful journalist and public relations executive in Silicon Valley. I feel that my art education at Edison and the journalism program prepared me for my career.
