Our daughter is completing her junior year at Hicksville. We have been pleased with the range of subjects available to her, including some college courses. Her teachers are excellent, helpful and encouraging. During grade school years, she was in Vanguard from third grade through eighth grade and it made a very good basis for her high school years. I like the fairly relaxed attitude of the teachers, the kidding around and joking with the students; but one area that really needs consideration for improvement is an acceptance of different faiths as a mitigating factor in some areas. Our faith, Seventh-day Adventism, precludes participation in many things -- including testing of any kind -- on our Sabbath hours, which are from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. This isn't arbitrary; it is deeply heartfelt and a bulwark of our faith. But when we first drove through Hicksville, as a young married couple, my husband muttered, "Hicksville! I'd never lived in a place with a name like Hicksville!" That has been nearly forty years ago, we have lived here 31 years, and it has been a wonderful place to live, raise our children, and school them.
