5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved to this neighborhood specifically to attend Charles Barrett and we couldn't be happier about it. CBES is such a special school. The teachers go out of their way to communicate with parents and the kids feel supported and cared for. The integration of the arts makes learning fun and exciting. Also, having an after school program in the adjacent Rec Center is a lifesaver.Parent Review3y ago14 Reviews - Alexandria City High School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI'm reviewing this school based on my experience alone, as a parent who's two children went to school here after going to private school from K-8. I learned over the years that the reason Alexandria City has one high school is the city's decision to have one high school for all, not several high schools, of which there's a "bad" high school in the lower income areas and a "good" high school in the higher income areas. Because of this, there will be a handful of kids who create trouble. But my two daughters never felt unsafe at this school and love the diversity (not just in meeting students from different ethnic backgrounds, but also socio economic backgrounds). They've really thrived at ACHS, both academically and socially and have gone on to amazing universities (and got accepted into highy sought after universities as well -- Univ. of Michigan, Univ of Chicago, UVA, VA Tech, Georgia Tech....etc....mentioning this because I think ACHS gets a really bad rap for its academics and being a problem school) If your student wants to learn, they will learn. The teachers and resources are amazing, and they really do care about the success of the students. In comparison to the private school that our children attended from K-8, the teacher qualifications are unmatched. Private schools set their own bar, which means they can hire whoever they choose. The steps to become a public high school teacher is rigorous and far surpass what's needed in a private school. We've had a really wonderful experience sending our daughters there. I will say that parent engagement is very low....but I think that's also because a lot of the parents hold multiple jobs and are not able to engage because they also have smaller children. And the population is very large, so if your child isn't good at being independent and figuring things out on their own, maybe it's not the right place for them. That said, it's the perfect launching pad to the next stage in their adult life -- whether it be a university, trade school, or other.Parent Review3mo ago90 Reviews - Governor's Health Science Academy

"It’s a great neighborhood for dogs since many dog owners in the area. In my immediate neighborhood, there are not enough sidewalks but the streets are quiet and safe to walk on with minimal car traffic. "

"Alexandria has a small town feel, while being 4 miles away from a big city! Great mix of idyllic places to live in a very historically rich town. "

"There are limited sidewalks in my neighborhood due to the age of the development, which is almost 100 years old. "

"Beverley Park has been redone and is an incredible neighborhood park. We also have added more trees to the Beverley Hills community through a tree planting program."

"Having lived in this area for 30 years, I can say that if you want access to restaurants, movies and entertainment, this is where eyou want to live. Cross 395 to Shirlington or go downtown or Old Town in minutes. Friendly, beautiful neighborhoods. Plenty of on-street parking (except for Old Town which is terrible--prepare for tickets!) Pentagon City Mall, minutes away, Potomac Yards and Hoffman Center, plus Old Town to visit or walk to. Easy Pentagon Metro access. Major bike paths (Mt. Vernon and WO&D) access from Beverley Hills area. Love it here! "

"Parkfairfax is a delightful community built after WWII that went condo in the early 1970s. There is STRONG COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT among the residents of the 1,632 condos. A monthly Community Newsletter keeps you informed about upcoming Community Yard Sales, Azalea Festival, Holiday Decoration contest, Halloween activities, etc. The Village at Shirlington (an eating-meeting-theatre-movie-shopping destination) is just across I-395 and there's a pedestrian bridge linking Shirlington to Parkfairfax. This is a great place to live, so near DC and still in a wooded, outdoorsy area! "

"This is a beautiful, wooded, quiet area very family friendly and only 5 miles to downtown DC. It is also close to Old Town Alexandria, close to Shirlington and Del Ray. Great elementary schools, very safe. You feel like living in the country while you are only five miles from DC's National Mall. "
