5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWhen Mr. Barker left, Sandburg quickly went downhill. It’s bad, sad, and depressing. There is no school spirit. The building and student enrollment is too big for a middle school. There is so much negativity every single day to the point where it gets exhausting, stressful, and somewhat toxic. There are also a lot of fights and high-level drama situations on a weekly basis. Half the teachers here are not good. The school doesn’t do a good job in motivating students to do better and be positive. Doesn’t matter if your kid gets straight A’s or is a misbehaving one, they’ll get overlooked unless they’re a “favorite”. Half of the administration does not possess the skill set to effectively support students and manage the school. This school is very messy. I wouldn't be a teacher here. If your child has to go to this school, I would monitor them like a hawk, ask questions, and demand accountability.Other Review3w ago29 Reviews - West Potomac High School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter was so excited and proud to be accepted into the full time AAP program and start 3rd grade at Stratford. What we didn't account for with the transfer was an hour long bus ride in each direction, teaching methods that were much more technology heavy than our base school, and a yearlong feeling of disconnect from what she was learning in the classroom. Over the course of the entire school year, my daughter didn't bring home a single spelling test, worksheet, or graded paper or test... one of the key ways parents can monitor progress and ciricculum. We never saw an art project, or any project for that matter. It's wild that in 3rd grade students can be pushed onto computers so heavily that there is no tangle parts of their education that come home. My daughter boards the bus at 8:05 each morning, and get's dropped off at 5pm each evening... for a standard school day. We have participated in most every major school event, I've volunteered in the classroom and chaparoned school trips, but I never felt that my interaction with other parents or staff members was sincere... it was a big let down. The school lacks warmth. We were expecting something spectacular, and were met with mediocre. Needless to say the transfer forms have been filed.Parent Review2w ago27 Reviews - Check out schools near Loraine Ave.

"Feels like a small town , not a suburb. Good schools, small shops, locally owned businesses. Close to Old Town and DC. Not VERY diverse, but getting better. Good farmers markets, "

"I have lived here since 1982 (36 years) and I have enjoyed the neighborhood very much! I raised both my children here and feel very safe. The house values have continued to increase over the years and the neighborhood remains a great place to start a family."

"I have lived here for 37 years and raised two children here. Great area. It has A great community pool. It is a great neighborhood to raise kids and to live. The only reason I’m moving is to live closer to my kids and my grandkids."

"This area of only single-family detached homes is often an overlooked jewel in the Northern VA and DC metro area. Most of the area was fully built out by the end of the 1960's and the low density character of the neighborhoods will not change. Quarter and half acre lots with large trees are the norm. But you have to like that sort of thing -- the immediate area has little shopping and few restaurants. Although there are maybe 50 restaurants within 15 minutes by car, only 4 could be considered within walking distance. Awesome place to raise you children (and pets) and yet popular among retirees. The local elementary school is the Arts and Science Focus school with emphasis on science, the fine arts, choral and instrumental music, and dance and drama. The school also offers the optional Spanish language immersion program for grades 1 through 6. The next closest school offers the Gifted and Talented program (for those who qualify). Easy commute to DC by car -- but by public transportation, not so much."

"This is a friendly area of only single-family homes with large yards, easy access to recreation and great schools. Close-in location without big city traffic or congestion. Children can safely walk to elementary and middle schools. Adjacent to George Washington Parkway and Fort Hunt Park with miles of biking and walking trails."

"Having lived here for over 40 years this is a fantastic area located near the Potomac River and easy access to points North (DC) via GW Pkwy and other main roads. Near Ft Belvoir (Army) is great for our many military families (active/retired) for the new state of art hospital. Great walking and biking trails along with parks. Community sports programs are considered the best in the county and range from just fun neighborhood leagues to very competitive travel teams for the serious athlete. A great place to raise a family and be a kid."

"I lived two doors down from this house for about 10 years. Stratford Landing is one of the best neighborhoods that I have ever lived in. The people are friendly, close to GW PKWY, Mt Vernon Bike Trail and Old Town Alex. There are food delivery and gourmet take out services within a couple of miles (on the way home from DC off Ft Hunt Rd). There is a first class recreation center nearby with various activities, including ice skating!"
