8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI graduated recently from the IB Diploma program. I found that anderson high school offered a great balance of challenging academics and support for students. In particular, I found the math and history departments amazing. I struggled with math at the beginning of high school, failing quizzes and tests frequently, but through the support of the teachers and their encouragement, I made it up to Calc BC with an A+ in the class and got a 5 on the AP test. In addition to that, the IB history department was so great and really prepared their students well for college and for the IB exams. I was a lazy student when it came to studying for my IB exams at the end of senior year, but because of the structure of the history curriculum and the challenging nature of the class, I got a 7 without much self-driven studying. Not that I encourage not studying, but the class itself was so interesting and valuable that the review materials that were offered by the class were sufficient studying for me. I also think the club and athletic scene at Anderson is really great. I encourage all students to get involved with a sport or meaningful extracurricular to really get the Anderson experience. I now attend a "public ivy" university and feel like Anderson prepared me really well for my classes and helped me learn a lot about myself and what I want to do. I will say that I don't know what it's like to not be an AP/IB student at Anderson, but from my experience the AP/IB classes were great and the teachers were really passionate and supportive.Other Review1y ago16 Reviews - Doss Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageDoss was a great school for our kids until 3rd grade. By 5th grade it felt like a public school in an extremely under funded area. In 5th my son basically leaned nothing. For example he was taught the water table for the 2nd time and went through the same math class He did in 4th grade. He witnessed fights, bullying, and general lack of engagement in the class room by both teachers and students. It was bad enough for us to take both our kids out and go private for the rest of their education.Parent Review1y ago23 Reviews - Murchison Middle School

"There are always friendly faces out - kids, bikers, runners. It’s very family oriented and has a great park with tennis and a pool. Close vicinity to some of Austin’s best restaurants, a movie theater, grocery stores, and super easy to get downtown."

"Two Main Street so can be noisy just avoid them and you’re fine. There is also a lot of gated apt complexes so you might not have a lot of space there for grass "

"We are the Yard Bar neighborhood! Dogs are everywhere and everywhere beloved. But since there are so many dogs, the neighborhood expects responsible owners and well-trained canine family members. "

"The elementary school is like a movie set. Kids art everywhere. Animals. Everyone uses the playground and people fly kites in the sports field. There’s the most magical 4th of July parade with bagpipes and floats that ends at the elementary school - free ice cream and pledge of allegiance. Halloween is just as cute. Christmas is a lights wonderland. "

"We have a stellar newsletter. And our population seems to be quite active as stewards of Austin’s growth along Burnet Rd. I have often been asked to become aware of changes and proposals that I never would’ve heard of otherwise. I’m glad so many people in our area make it their business or their hobby to be good stewards of the neighborhood. "

"This neighborhood combines the best of both worlds, which is decreasingly common - urban living combined with spacious, family friendly lots and atmosphere. You can literally walk or bike everywhere and you can also enjoy the privacy of a spacious backyard with enough space for big items like pool and trampoline. It's suburban living without the monotony of suburbia."

"Allandale Park is quickly becoming the hottest area of Austin, Texas! Burnet Rd. has new restaurants and bars opening up almost daily. The proximity to downtown and The University of Texas is fantastic!"

"Austin is one of the most dog-friendly towns in America, and Allandale is part of that. We have lots of people with dogs and dog-friendly parks."

"In rush hour traffic, it's about 20—30 minutes to downtown, and 30-45 minutes back in the afternoon. For Austin traffic, this is about as good as it gets without moving into downtown with its sky-high rental prices. From here, it's easy to get on MoPac and drive downtown. And if you work north of Allandale, there's virtually no traffic."

"While it's a busy area for a suburb (you'd have to supervise kids outside with traffic), it is a neighborhood with tons of families."

"While this part of town still has plenty of walkable, safe streets, it also has some bigger (older) shopping complexes that are not as pet-friendly as some of the places slightly further south. At least that's the impression I get. We don't see as many people with pets around, but we also don't walk around the neighborhood much—we tend to drive more here."

"It's slightly north of Brentwood but closer to the highway. In rush hour traffic I'd say it's probably a solid 25—30 minute commute to downtown."

"It has excellent Metro Bus service. It's 30 minutes to Republic Square downtown on the 803. The 19, 325, and 3 bus routes get me easily all over Austin—North/South or East/West. There are lots of cyclists on Shoal Creek and lots of walkers in the neighborhood."

"Allandale is northwest of Brentwood and has similar qualities to other closeby neighborhoods. It's good for young families, safe. It has grown slightly slower than the other nearby parts of town, but there is still plenty going on with quite a bit to do."

"It has one school, Pillow Elementary, and is very close to several private schools—principally St. Louis Catholic school. There's not a lot of open parkland other than at Pillow school, but there are safe sidewalks and an excellent library close by for kids to walk to."

"There are good schools and lots of family friendly places for kids. It's very close to the children's museum, and there are lots of options for good preschools and preschool-age parent/child classes. It's a safe, friendly neighborhood for families."

"It's a ten minute drive to UT, the State Capitol, the museums, and all the happenings downtown. Yet the truly wonderful fact about this central Austin location is that it offers more acreage per person in all of Austin. Not only do you have the advantage of living in central Austin, but also you have the pleasure of enjoying life in quiet, spacious surroundings filled with trees, birds, bike trails, and parks. This central location is a gem. "

"Burnet Rd. from Northland down to Medical is turning into a mini-SoCo, lots of shops a few restaurants, antiquies, salons and Amy's headquarter and main restaurant. "
