7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWonderful and well-rounded school that truly cares about students, staff and families. Families are very engaged and adds to a deep close-knit community feel. The academics are robust and well thought through, with a focus on enhancing curiosity and real-world application. The arts programming is phenomenal and allows young students to find their artistic niche. Afterschool care and clubs are vibrant! Mr. Garza the principal is outstanding! Cannot recommend the school enough.Parent Review9mo ago17 Reviews - Thomas Starr King Middle School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating Averageparent of a 7th grader here. The curriculum for the 6th/7th GAT program is a mixed bag. Here are our grades for the 4 core classes:ELA: A. class and teacher were solid, well taught, good mix of topics (debate, critical thinking), independent reading, and literature and analyzed by the entire class. The students did not learn any advanced vocabulary however =(.History: A-/B+. Standard course on world cultures, teacher stuck to the textbook. Some puzzling assignments, such as a 'key terms' where the students had to provide images for ~20+ terms pertaining to a certain historical period or culture. Kids just used Gemini and Grok to make pictures for terms like 'patriarchal' and 'heriditary'. Yeah, pretty dumb.Math: B. Teacher moves fast, tests designed to test how quickly you can solve, not necessarily whether the student learned the key concepts.Science/Health: D. Teacher clocked out years ago and is mailing it in. No labs for chemistry or biology, just 3rd grade-level busywork crafting projects, liek the 'food truck' project, where the students were asked to build a paper food truck from scratch, using a 33point grading critera, including functionality on the interior cabinets, whether or not the truck has side mirrors. Ugh-- just soo bad. No educational value.Zoopalooza class: F. Another poorly designed, laughable busywork class, consisting of teams of 4 students assigned to do summer camp-level crafting (a diorama, a stuffed animal) of a random animal they are assigned at the beginning of the year. My kiddo's team never found time to meet, they almost failed the class but yeah it's so ridiculously dumb.Field Trips: F. Yeah they went to the zoo.Campus: Uninspired public school campus, feels straight out of 1979.Other fun parts: grades for tests and assignments are not posted regularly to Schoology, so you' be checking every day for weeks, nothing changes, then all of a suddent 23 different grades are posted, and your kid is getting a C becuase the teacher gave a 0/20 for an assignment that was due the day your kid was travelling or at a dentist appointment. Good luck fixing it!Parent Review1mo ago45 Reviews - Sotomayor Arts and Sciences Magnet

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageToday I had the pleasure of meeting with my scholar’s college counselor Ms. Kelly Andrade, and I must say I left feeling so excited and deeply grateful. She brought her fresh energy that kids can relate to along with professionalism and genuine passion that went beyond what I expected. After our meeting I felt like my kid could move an entire village under her mentorship! To be fully transparent, when I first scheduled to meet with ECALs college counselor, I was initially nervous as I had met the prior one during parents night and my husband and I were not impressed nor did we feel confident she could rise to the occasion. But today’s meeting quickly turned those jitters into excitement, motivation, and confidence that my child is on the right path. Ms. Andrade took the time to truly understand my child’s goals, strengths, and was transparent with potential barriers that might arise. She tailored a plan for our child and implemented strategies to keep us connected so we can move forward with a clear path. As a parent having guidance in such a pivotal moment in a child’s life is paramount and we feel she is the perfect person for the job. We feel so excited for the next steps and she is the counselor thus far that every child deserves. Thank you Ms. Andrade for going above and beyond we are truly lucky to have you.Parent Review1y ago2 Reviews - Alliance Tennenbaum Family Technology High

"I grew up here with my grandparents. I have always felt at home here and I wish I could return to live here once more. But it's just way too expensive it saddens me to the core that I can't afford to live where I grew up. "

"it's pretty dog friendly, with plenty of park near by. echo park lake and Elysian pack are great spots to take your pup. they're both spacious with benefits to both. Elysian has many trails to discover and echo park lake has a great picnic spot to bring your dog. "

"Echo park is pretty safe and family friendly. Great for young single families. Very diverse community even though that was caused mostly by gentrification. Overall wonderful food and coffee shops walking and driving distance. My small family loves living here. "

"Echo Park might be the last egalitarian neighborhood in LA. Working class, hipsters, artists, professionals, Latinos, Caucasians, Asians, African Americans, Gay, Straight, dog lovers, kids, old, young.. I see all of them every day here. Echo Park is funky, artsy and a little rough around the edges. And what other LA neighborhood has TWO great parks (Echo Park Lake & Elysian Park).."
