1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI used to work here from 2017-2020 and when I heard the news that this school is closing, I was so happy! The students with the exception of like 20%, are the absolute worst people I’ve ever had to teach. They’re rude, violent, very very low IQ, and their parents are no different. The school is an entire safety concern and admin will do absolutely nothing to help you or your child if they are bullied, beaten up and in fact, will probably cover it up and blame you. The academics are incredibly low, the students refuse to learn and would rather fight, argue, scream and resist any type of education. When Covid hit, I was so glad to have gotten away from these students and I was even more thankful that the good students were set free from them as well. I am glad this school is closing, it’s underperforming for years and I hope the school is demolished and the land is put to better use.Thank you Austin ISD for making the correct decision!Other Review5mo ago7 Reviews - Zavala Elementary School

"Lots of parks for owners to take their dogs to play with other dogs. Plenty of trash bins as well, which is nice. "

"I don’t own a dog. So I can’t advise. However there are many dog owners in this neighborhood. ............."

"There are not enough sidewalks, so you wind up walking your dog in the street."

"There are few dog parks, a major negative."

"The diversity in East Austin is a benefit. It's close to everything, and the houses are not that expensive compared to some other locations."

"It has a good mix of 'old East Austin' and new, modern establishments. The neighborhood is very walkable, with everything we need (restaurants, shops, etc.) close by. And it's a quick walk to downtown."

"There's a broad variety of people in this area. Some friendly, some not. But you likely won't see the same person twice in one day!"

"Easy access to and from I-35. We are located centrally so it's easy to get in and out of the neighborhood."

"We almost always walk. For driving, I-35 is very close by. Downtown is a 10—15 minute walk away."

"Hectic. There are too many people walking/driving/biking all in the same lane!"

"It's two miles on I-35 to my downtown job. The only issue is too much traffic on the roads."

"There aren't as many crosswalks and traffic lights as some parents might want."

"The neighborhood is diverse as far as age goes, so there is a mix of families and a younger generation. But even the younger professional generation is pretty subdued in my neighborhood. It's definitely not a college student area with parties or anything."

"This is a safe neighborhood for children, but we need more sidewalks. Cars drive too fast through our streets."

"Commuting out of the neighborhood can be hectic due to its high density."

"Though Austin schools have been criticized, the Blackshear Elementary school is in the top 10 in AISD. We have 4th Fridays on 11th Street where restaurants and retailers join with residents to celebrate our neighborhood. Quick jaunt to the airport, too, without the noise - airlines usually fly away from our neighborhood - incoming/outgoing. And there is Metrorail nearby. Truly a changing community with inclusion for old and new."
