Neighborhood Description

From miles away, people can see Berkeley, thanks to the Campanile tower on the UC Berkeley campus, rising 13 stories above the city. Created in 1868, the University of California became one of leading universities in the world and the flagship of the entire UC system. But, to really know Berkeley, you have walk the streets and meet the people that make Berkeley one of the most unique and exciting cities on the planet.
Berkeley has a rich architectural history, offering many homes from such important names as Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. From the Arts & Crafts and Mediterranean bungalows in North Berkeley to the Craftsman homes in Elmwood, Berkeley probably has the perfect home for almost anyone. And, if you need help, the city’s terrific website offers easy-to-use guidance on almost everything, including permit histories, rent board issues, and even their unique “golden duplex” rule.
The City of Berkeley really stepped onto the world stage during the turbulent sixties and seventies. When not engaging in political discourse, Berkeley citizens needed food and art, so a cultural revolution was ignited. Chez Panisse changed the world of food, Berkeley Rep sends show after to show to a national audience and 924 Gilman introduces new bands to the world.
When you want to return to your college days, you can always visit the street vendors on Telegraph Avenue, the hangouts on Shattuck in downtown Berkeley, or watch Cal defeat Stanford at the Big Game. Away from campus, Berkeley is home to many parks, from big Tilden Park up in the hills to the gorgeous marina and waterfront. Shop and eat your way through the day on Solano Avenue or in the Gourmet Ghetto. It is easy to get around town, using BART, AC Transit, or the city’s many bicycle pathways.
Whether you want to get an education, start a revolution or just be yourself, Berkeley has a way of life for everyone.

"they would love to take their pets to the park in the area. they may not like the parking availability at certain times throughout the day. "
  • Trulia User
"There are a lot of dog walkers around during the day time, but the street lighting isn’t consistent. Also, nearby parks do not feel very safe before sunrise or after sunset. There are frequent assaults reported in the area. I make a point to only walk my dog during the day and without headphones in, so that I can be aware of my surroundings. "
  • Trulia User
"The neighbors in general are great, the gardens - well kept, there are tons of stores and things to do. "
  • Hector R.
"Berkeley is a great city to live in. Beautiful views of the bay, restaurants and shopping are close by. Sidewalks and roads need major improvement."
  • Alondratrevino
"Very easy commute to San Francisco. Transbay bus is 5 mins walking and Bart is 20 mins walking or 5 mins driving."
  • Sue H.

We enjoy the walks, restaurants, cafes, the library and grocery stores—all in easy walking distance. Public transportation is easily available, a few minutes walk. This is a great neighborhood to have a dog and to raise children."
  • Sue H.
"The Bart is a short walk which makes getting around convenient- particularly to the Cal Campus from the Downtown Berkeley BART station."
  • Sue H.
"Typical town stuff- fall festival, harvest festival, farmers markets are nice and most things are walkable. Typical problems with any urban area."
  • slwhite_510
"I have lived in the area for over 10 years. There are so many restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, grocery stores, etc within walking distance or within a five minute drive. North Berkeley Bart is within a 7 minute walk; SF express bus lines on Gilman and San Pablo. Amtrak (in Emeryville) is within a 7-10 min drive. The area is bike friendly. It’s single and family area. Lots to do!"
  • Shane H.
"This neighborhood keeps getting better! Phillz coffee, Acme Bread, 4th Street Shopping, etc. We love starting our family here."
  • kimsyer
"I have lived in this neighborhood for close to three years now. I spend a lot of time on the street walking my dog and walking with my child and feel very much 'at home' here. I've met lovely people and feel the location is one of the best in Berkeley. Others in the area feel the same way. "
  • jrout1
"Having lived at different locations in Berkeley for the past 15 years, currently in North West Berkeley, this neighborhood is one of the nicer places in town. A stone-throw from the freeway, a short walk to Bart, quiet, friendly neighbors."
