"Affordable and quiet for the most part. Gets shady as you head towards 290, very nice people, rent should stay affordable "
  • Aelessner
"North Loop is awesome. Friendly neighbors, walking distance to groceries, restaurants and bars. The best trick or treating is 10 blocks away. Love Hyde Park/ North Loop. "
  • Brenda F.
"come to know others dogs by name. It's a great place to live. We have been here three years now. On the negative side, we could use more transit in the area."
  • Oliviatlavender
"This neighborhood is very friendly and nice; everyone is always walking their dogs. The only downside is it’s a bit loud because of Koenig but it’s definitely not the noisiest of austin neighborhoods. Overall the neighborhood is safe as well, wouldn’t walk at night but that’s just because there aren’t many streetlights!"
  • Janet
"The streets are semi-high traffic. There's a lot of through traffic traveling between two busy streets. "
  • Angela H.
"There are very fast buses that run down Duval st. Not super safe for kids in the regard. Very quiet and dog friendly."
  • Valerie K.
"It’s like the old Austin hip and groovy. Plus I can get anywhere fast any highway. It’s affordable and nice neighborhood "
  • Kelly M. M.
"We have block parties regularly as well as ongoing neighborly interaction. Additionally, we have many small businesses nearby that enable community culture "
  • Kelly M. M.
"It’s older and quiet and there’s lots of independent businesses (including restaurants and shops) within walking distance. There are two coffee shops that are easy to get to that I live. "
  • Grace T.
"I see people walking their dogs around all the time! And a lot of the nearby restaurants and bars are outdoor-dog-friendly. There are so many places to walk your dogs—a lot of trails, open fields, and parks. I'm not sure if there is a designated dog park nearby, though, and not all of the neighborhood streets have sidewalks."
  • Stacy Y.
"This neighborhood is dog-friendly, and there are sidewalks for dog walking. Many local bars welcome pets, too."
  • Jan S.
"Dog owners will love the company of many other dog walkers on the street. Although we don't have parks or dog parks, there is a triangle of parkland that we in the neighborhood developed and maintain, where people take their dogs to play frisbee, etc."
  • Yurri Y.
"There are a few parks here, which is a great feature for dog owners. Also we have special events for dogs."
  • Jennifer L.
"Its combination of students and long-term residents, as well as working-class renters, makes it unique. Plus its hip boutiques, food stands, restaurants, and bars."
  • Stacy Y.
"Highlights are the amazing variety of restaurants, quirky/independently owned thriving businesses, proximity to downtown, and affordable housing. The North Loop Ave drag is amazing, with all its shops, restaurants, and bars. There are so many people out and about strolling up and down North Loop all the way from Lamar."
  • Grace T.
"North Loop has an even mix of the reasons people love Austin! It's also great because you're close to all the fun areas, but without all the noise and chaos. There's a lot of nature—parks, trails, fields—plus bars, fun shops, and restaurants."
  • Debra L.
"The houses are a mix of Old Austin and new houses being built. It is easy to get onto MoPac and just 8 minutes away from the city. The area is heavily wooded and filled with deer."
  • Yurri Y.
"This neighborhood has a huge amount of vintage stores, record shops, and coffee places. It's definitely a leader in keeping the city weird and special."
  • Debra L.
"Easy, peasy. Even if MoPac is at a standstill, I can still make it into downtown Austin in 15 minutes, or I can shoot down Balcones."
  • Jennifer L.
"It's very easy to hop on a bus from here. I wouldn't want to drive, as traffic can get pretty bad. A lot of people drive through this neighborhood to get to major Austin streets."
  • Yurri Y.
"Usually I commute by car, but this neighborhood has good public transport. Also sometimes it's nice to take a bike."
  • Stacy Y.
"While there are single-family homes and parks, this neighborhood seems to be geared to and more populated by single and/or childless 30somethings."
  • Yurri Y.
"This is a safe and calm part of the city."
  • Grace T.
"It is very safe and offers very affordable living for a place that's still close to everything in Austin! There are also schools nearby. The age demographics are very mixed, from older college/grad students to families. It's about an eight-minute drive to two different H-E-B groceries or to the Wheatsville co-op, which has organic/specialty groceries."
  • Debra L.
"The houses still have large lots from back in the '60s and '70s, and the schools are great. There's Doss, Highland Park, and Pillow Elementary. For middle school, you can choose from Murchasion and Lamar Middle School. The high schools in the area are Anderson and McCallum."
  • Jan S.
"There are two elementary schools within walking distance."
  • Debbie S.
"Central to everything Austin. This is the true Austin with access to shopping, parks, restaurants, in a quiet location."
  • Kfrazer6
"I'm not sure why anyone would say there are sketchy areas near here - Austin is an incredibly safe city. This area is also next to one of the better high schools in Austin (none of the public high schools are particularly terrific). There is also a fair amount of stuff on North Loop, which is nice and I imagine that Highland Mall will eventually be developed thus making this area very desirable. The only downside is that the closest grocery store is one of the less nice ones and it's not all that close."
  • oiuy
"I live near here and have a friend over here. It's close to some sketchy neighborhoods, but this is a nice pocket! It's good. I feel safe enough."
