The conditions of the building are not representation of the student body. It’s reflection of the management and lack of standards and values for providing an education of value. I wouldn’t send my child here due to the management and day-to-day operations.

The administration is horrible. The ratio of students to teacher is 35:1. Admin is not supportive, don't appropriately punish kids for bullying, fighting, or discrimination and just let them go, while the teachers have to constantly break up fights and discipline kids all while trying to teach a damn lesson. The parents are either too involved (parent meetings every morning) or don't care to discipline their kid at home while the school does nothing about it. They hire substitute teachers instead of full-time for years to pay them less (10K loss on their pay) and let them go when its time for them to receive tenure. It's a sick game. If you want to be a decent teacher, this is not the school or the administration for that. Avoid applying here at all costs.

Our family has generally had a very positive experience with Battery Park City School in both elementary school and middle school. The teachers use Google Classroom in middle school, so it's very easy to follow along with how your child is doing academically. Battery Park is a super safe neighborhood, so kids are able to enjoy time walking around together during "out lunch" for middle schoolers. There is a pretty low/reasonable amount of homework, which we appreciated so that kids could have time to play outside or read at home. The school covers the required curriculum thoroughly and helps kids get in the habit of asking questions and getting organized. One downside of this school for us is that we experienced passing issues with disruptive classmates who could be physically aggressive. The school responded immediately in all cases. There is also a variety of academic motivation levels among students, so you'd want to think about where your child falls along that motivation spectrum and what your goals are for them. One of our kids was more of a self-starter who found his circle of motivated peers. We loved the convenience of living close to school and having our kids have good friends in the neighborhood for impromptu playdates. Best wishes if you are starting at this school!
