The Thomas Jefferson Southard House is ''One of the most stylish wooden Italianate houses surviving in Maine'' according to the Historic American Buildings Survey at the United States Library of Congress, but it didn't start out that way. In 1870, the home was much more simple, but was purchased and redesigned by Thomas Jefferson Southard, a prominent shipbuilder in 1888. Throughout the years many careful restoration projects have taken place, so that many of the rooms are period-correct. Features include 11' high, beautiful painted tin ceilings, hardwood flooring including original parquet-style joinery, and an awesome observation tower with panoramic views of Richmond and the Kennebec River. This special home has many potential uses, both residential and commercial. Attached to the main house there is a finished, restored Carriage House, which most recently was a museum display area.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school year most of the teachers are brand new, straight out of college. Before a lot of the teachers weren't very good at teaching and just here, "Here's your laptop, read the assignment on google docs and do it." Now there is much more interaction with the students. We can't tell really how much better the teaching will be yet, but it has definitely improved on that respect. One problem a lot of the system has is that it does emphasize too much on sports no matter what season it is (soccer, basketball, or baseball/softball). The students regularly get taken out of school to go to away games several hours away or even practice just outside of the school. They also have the new 1-4 grading system that doesn't prepare anyone for life beyond school with almost no deadlines. The school also tries to integrate special needs students with regular learning students, and most of the time this really doesn't help anyone. There have only been problems. Almost everyday we have "code greens" go off, which means a special needs student needs restraining. It is improving though, it's just taking longer than anyone is expecting.Student Review11y ago - Richmond Middle School
