About this House
More than likely George Washington didn't sleep here, but there's a high probability that he visited Lebbeus Dod at his workroom. The Dod family were renowned clock and instrument makers, arriving in Mendham around 1745. Lebbeus was a Captain in the Continental Army. General Washington asked him to resign his commission so that he could fix the muskets for the soldiers. He did this work in a room which is now incorporated into the main house. Lebbeus also created the parallel ruler with protractor and plotting scale, and his works are displayed in the American Decorative Arts section New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Two more original rooms remain, one of which has been used as a breakfast room and the other as a cozy den, the perfect spot to curl up with a good book. The exposed brick wall in the dining room was part of the original home's exterior.
Through the years this five-bedroom, four full bath home has been expanded and thoughtfully updated. The signature glass-enclosed front porch is one such expansion and the newest addition is the light and bright four-season sunroom overlooking the barns and the smaller of the two backyards. Windows abound throughout, ensuring that the home is bathed in natural light.
Yet another special feature is a potential guest suite near the spacious living room. This includes the room where the muskets were fixed and the instruments were made, an adjoining full bath and a sitting room which was most recently used as an office. The main floor consists of a kitchen and living room as well as the aforementioned dining room, breakfast room, den, potential guest suite, enclosed front porch and 4- season sunroom.
The second level offers a dressing room/office leading into the primary bedroom with adjoining bath. Four additional bedrooms and two more full baths complete the second floor.
Enhancing the 1.3-acre property is an open yard behind the main red barn, an expansive, level lawn backing to protected land which was the site of the owners' daughter's wedding. An in-ground gunite pool and second red barn complete this bucolic setting.
Mendham Borough benefits from highly-rated public schools and a variety of nearby private schools. This community has an abundance of open space for parks and walking trails, concerts in the park, a lively carnival which culminates with the Labor Day Parade and much more. Mass transportation, fine dining and shopping are all close by.
