1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI would not recommend MLK my son was there from 2-5 grade during his time at MLK he was in constant fights I’m sure he had a part in some of them other times not so much one day he reported that two other boys were calling him some unsavory names like a female dog or a female reproductive system. When he reported it the teacher said sticks and stones which my son didn’t even understand and didn’t even address the other boys later that day my son was using the restroom and was attacked by the two boys Also, it took almost 2 years to get him an IEP evaluation after constant requests to faculty and eventually to the principal and then eventually to the school district the one thing that was great about MLK was that after school program They took great care of the kids fed them. Made sure they did their homework got all of their extra energy out so when it was time to come home, they were ready to Eat have a little fun and lay down Also my son told me that the school lunches were not bad most days. Now that he’s in 6th grade at a new school so far not 1 fight not 1 yelling match he’s made so much progress in the short time he’s been there I am so thankful.Parent Review11mo ago11 Reviews - McClymonds High School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIt has been really difficult at McClymonds recently. In the last couple of weeks a math teacher and a humanities teacher have both quit, and there does not seem to be any clear plan or solution on the way. What makes this even harder is that many parents have no idea how bad things have become inside the school.Student behavior has played a big role in the situation. The environment has become so disruptive that it is pushing teachers away and making real learning almost impossible. Students who genuinely want to focus and succeed end up suffering because the behavior problems are not being addressed. In biology we have not had a consistent teacher at all. We have had substitutes almost every day, and we are not learning the material we need to learn. It is heartbreaking and discouraging to feel our education slipping away, not because we lack motivation, but because the disruptions and the instability make it impossible to move forward.Students deserve better. We deserve consistent teaching, a safe and focused learning environment, and adults who can actually support our education. It is not fair that our learning is being compromised like this, and the situation needs to be acknowledged and addressed so things can improve. My classmates throw chairs, hit each other, curse in class, and even throw water bottles all over the room, and it makes learning feel impossible.Student Review7mo ago7 Reviews - West Oakland Middle School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son is a seventh grader at WOMS - it’s his second year there. We love this school! Mr Parikh teaches Computer Science and now my kid is editing videos for Prescott Elementary School as an alumni. Dr. Vlad has inspired my son to try high level math. Principal Ummat is a young, dedicated administrator at the helm. A great neighborhood middle school. Thanks to everyone working there!@Parent Review5y ago3 Reviews - Home And Hospital Program

"Not many families in this area. Mostly young couples. It is certainly safe for families but there aren’t many places for little kids to enjoy or areas to play and run free. "

"Lots of dogs in the neighborhood and a few areas where they play off leash near the marina. Lots of dogs running around having a great time. People don’t consistently pick up after their dogs around my apartment complex though, which is disappointing. "

"Easily walk to either Lake Merritt or 12th street. 20 mins into the city. About a 15 minute walk. Very easy and tolerable if you work along the Bart line. Easy to manage a bicycle on Bart too if you work a bit further from Bart. I also love to treat myself by occasionally taking the ferry since it’s also only a 15 minute walk. "

"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is well liked by dogs and their owners because there is a very good walking trail for dogs to walk on, with access to swimming in the Estuary. There are many dogs in the area. Wag, the animal service facility, is close by."

"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is blessed with access to both easy public transportation as well as highway access. It is a 10-minute walk to BART, and there is a free shuttle bus that runs along the Broadway corridor to get to BART as well. The ferry to Alameda and San Francisco is within walking distance. But if you need to drive, you can jump right on the highway and drive to San Francisco or San Jose/Peninsula area very easily."

"The Produce & Waterfront neighborhood is unique because it is a blend of residential and industrial areas that are learning to coexist peacefully. New businesses open up every month, restaurants come to the neighborhood frequently, and there are more places that serve coffee, wine, and beer than in any other area in Oakland. All this, plus picturesque views of the Oakland Estuary and the bay leading to San Francisco. The restaurants along the waterfront are top-notch. They include seafood, Italian, wood-forged pizza, and Middle Eastern restaurants, many with outdoor seating. The weather in Oakland is conducive to lazy Sunday brunches in the sunshine."

"Produce & Waterfront is home to Jack London Square, which is easily the highlight of the neighborhood. Jack London Square hosts regular farmers' markets and festivals, with great food and other artisan goods. It's a casual and welcoming environment alongside a peaceful harbor. The area is quiet except for the Amtrak that runs directly through—careful not to live too close. Also, travel too far from the square and the vibe will change quickly, depending on what direction you go."

"I lived in this area for about 6 months while I transitioned to The Bay from the Midwest. Near Jack London Square, the area had some interesting shops and decent restaurant options. Exciting bars or nightlife choices are a little further away. There's a diverse group of people living in the neighborhood and most people are quite friendly. There's homeless that set up on the sidewalks from time to time and you will encounter larger homeless communities in the area as well. I lived close to an Amtrak and frieght rail line that could be very loud at all hours of the night so I had trouble sleeping and never completely got used to the sound of the horns. Overall, I thought the area was nice relative to the rest of Oakland, but it wasn't as nice or as alive as I had hoped which prompted me to move to SF."

"The Jack London District (no one calls it the produce district) is up and coming. full of great food, entertainment, art and shopping, this is one of the most walkable areas of Oakland. close to downtown, Old Oakland, Chinatown, and just a half-hour walk to the lake. Strolling the estuary at sunset is a treat this area affords, and its free! We love living here!"
