Description
This Miners Abode had five bedrooms and two full baths. Today, bedrooms have been converted to living rooms, however, they can still be bedrooms.
The Little House in the back is believed to be the original owners home since it is the only structure which would allow for just one family.
Current Day AND historic pics of our sweet little (not so little-1600+ sq feet + guest house on extra large lot w three parking spots - an issue in Jerome) Jerome Abode. Our "Miner's Abode" is listed on the AZ State Historic Preservation Inventory as Inventory #131. It is considered as a contributing historic structure in the Jerome Historic District of the Jerome National Historic Landmark designated in 1967.
The house, shown as "flats" in the 1917 Sanborn Fire Map for Jerome, consists of two stories, each with individual living quarters. From Jerome tax records, it would appear that the main dwelling on the property was built between 1913 and 1916, but is listed as built in 1912. The property appeared on the rolls first in 1914 and was then owned by Rene Rampont, priest of Jerome's Church of the Holy Family Church, Jerome Az.
In 1917 the property was owned by Steve Radokovich and the imrovements along were valued at $2000,00. This was home for miners and other mine workers in one of Jerome's large residential neighborhoods.
Known as the Mikael Starkovich house, our "Miner's Abode" as we are now calling it, is the perfect example of the architecture of the second decade of twentieth century Arizona and the copper mining town of Jerome!
As for the Miner's, each bedroom has it's own outside entry for their privacy! LOVE OUR AZ~!
We remodeled this house in 2016 completely restoring it to its origin. We tore the foundation out, dug new cornerstones, poured concrete, added new beams, lifted up best we could, straightened a major bulge into a slight bulge, added all new plumbing and electric downstairs and more. You can see the construction as we did it according to the recommendation of an engineer and with permits.
We have saved this old (According to the 1917 map, this home was lodging for miners. We suspect they housed 15 men, one per bedroom per shift.) home by building a new foundation, putting on a new roof and re-plumbing and wiring it to restore to its original beauty of 1912. See our work on Facebook at our Its NOT Okay House of Healing community page. https://www.facebook.com/itsnotokayhoh/
We are now (2019) continuing our remodel which includes the carport parking and garage which will allow two cars to park on premise. New fencing and insulation throughout main house.
There is room to park on 4th street and there is room onsite for another car or keep it as a garden.
This lot is a large corner lot in a very quiet neighborhood yet is walking distance to town.
