Description

Welcome to 655 Riverhill Drive in Beechwood Hills. This timeless 4 bedroom 2 bath ranch style home sits on a large natural wooded lot upon the Middle Oconee River. Entering the home you immediately notice the hardwood floors throughout and the open living plan connecting the living and kitchen areas providing great space and natural light coming from the double doors that lead to the large and updated tiered back deck. The large living/dining area has plenty of room for entertaining. The eat-in kitchen has plenty of cabinets, a built in island open to additional dining/sitting area with a wood burning fireplace making it a perfect spot to relax. Down the hall from the living areas is a shared full bathroom and 4 nice sized bedrooms, with 2 of the bedrooms connected by a shared full bathroom. There is interior/exterior access to the large basement with a cool sliding glass door at the base of the stairs. Currently, part of the basement houses the laundry area, a workshop area with built in shelves (and dutch door) along with plenty of open space that has potential for finishing, while the other side of the basement (estimating around 500 sqft) has HVAC in place, a wood burning fireplace, built in shelving and bar. From the basement there is access to the back patio area and lower tier of the back deck along with a firepit area and trail that leads down to the river. Back upstairs to the newly updated deck that overlooks this naturally wooded and fenced lot. Having the double doors open to the deck is a real treat for enjoying the nicer weather and gives a sense of privacy with all the surrounding trees in the back yard. The lot naturally slopes towards the Middle Oconee River and could be left in its current natural state or has great potential for beautiful landscaping from the house down to the river. These river lots are a rare treat in town and great place to relax with family and friends. Other details include HVAC replaced within the past 3 years, double paned windows throughout, additional storage in the carport, additional off street parking and this also being an original owner home. An interesting and fun bit of history is this home was built for James Jenkins (known to many as Jungle Jim), who pioneered the Wildlife Department at the UGA School of Forestry where he taught for several years. This lot was one of the first builds in Beechwood Hills and was chosen specifically by Dr. Jenkins for the bird watching opportunities and the feeling of living among the trees. Dr. Jenkins was the first graduate student of Dr. Eugene Odom (known as the Father Of Ecology) and also held several patents and was co-inventor of the tranquilizer gun that was instrumental in allowing endangered species such as the southern white rhino to be moved into protected reserves. Much of his invention research and work was done in the basement of 655 Riverhill Dr. Here's your chance to call this place home and have a part of history as a bonus!

"Is a very supportive community with sidewalks, parks, a great bookstore with a very good children’s section and a variety of restaurants "
  • Jackson Oglesby
"Lots of activity and opportunities to interact with other dog owners. Tends to be a very dog friendly city."
  • Trulia User
"Everything is typically within a fifteen to twenty minute drive. The big loop around the city gives easy access to get to all different areas of town, including UGA, popular shopping centers, and restaurants. "
  • Gina Ashley
"Trick or treating on Boulevard! Love it here so much! Could not pick a better area to raise a family in"
  • Jyoung530
"Very safe and kinda friendly but most folks do keep to themselves or interact with their own family. There is only a very light traffic of homeowners in my subdivision but unfortunately there are no sidewalks or play areas for the kids. Folks walk their dogs in the street. Children play in their own front or back yards it seems. You rarely see or hear them out and they won’t recognize you as a neighbor. This is unfortunate but typical of neighborhoods in this area and in the South."
  • Grady Thrasher
"Very walkable, great shops and restaurants, beautiful old homes. Decent number of rentals, which has positives and negatives. "
  • Trulia User

Just outside of Normaltown and in one of the best school zones in the county. Knottingham is a very special place to live."

"Bike ride to work. Little Over a mile. Beautiful quiet streets and a sidewalk on the busiest road. Only a couple lights along the way."
  • Chuck
"Barber street is usually covered in plastic cups from Greek rich kids parties. They also think it’s fine to just congregate in the streets and park like Barber is their driveway. But I do love boulevard and surrounding area. Have lived in this area for 17 years. I hear the school district is great. And being able to walk to downtown is fantastic."
  • Thomas B.
"Pool, dog park, playground, close to Walmart, Aldis, McDonalds, Kroger. Great maintenance department."
  • Elizabeth H.

"parks, drinking fountains, where you can go out with your pet, to be able to walk with your pet, and with your children too, since my children love their pets"
  • Savie R. A.
"Awesom town! Not too big and not too small. There are plenty of fun things to do almost every weekend "
  • Si Z.
"my neighborhood in normaltown. cute, expensive, but fun. I love my neighbors. people's yards are landscaped really well also. "
  • Ronnie A.
"More and more people are living here but the roads are staying the same size since the past 30 years. Traffic can be horrible going to work in the morning, and getting off work, from 4pm to 6pm, forget going anywhere. Depending what part of Athens you’re in, will effect your view on Athens. There’s a poor lifestyle and there’s a wealthy lifestyle to this town. Slowly Athens is updating its lifestyle to fit wealthy families. It sure is a college town, and traffic is much better once the college students are out of town. I’ve lived here my whole life so I know where to go and where not to go. I’ve seen girls/college girls out walking in places they shouldn’t have been walking (out of town ppl don’t know any better) but they think since it’s a college town it’s ok, and that’s where they’re wrong. Overall nice town but way too crowded. "
  • Brooke K.
"recovery fest and athfest are great plus all the vintage shops are quaint and not chained out. lots if life bands"
  • Allisonwhogue
"I drive to Oakwood every day, and it’s an easy commute. Not much traffic and a steady flow. Much better than when I lived in Atlanta! "
  • Prissymissy678
"Weekend events and UGA events.convenience to restaurants and shopping. Neighbors are not neighborly. Too much crime and police do not do their jobs."
  • Samantha E.
"Our current neighborhood isn’t that great. There’s not a lot of courtesy that gets displayed between residents, it’s in a sketchy part of town, and there have been a few crimes that have occurred here in a short amount of time. Would not recommend raising your children here. Also the public schools are terrible."
