Coming from a student it is a great school, but could offer students more freedom within the school. They keep adding restrictions that are making students feel controlled and sheltered. Schools are here to guide students into the rest of their lives but here we are not learning independence. If this continues students will not know how to be independent when they graduate. The teachers and resources at the school are amazing, and I have some close relationships with a good amount of my teachers.

The unparalleled positivity, approachability, and excellence of the principal and associate principal of Indian Mound Middle School trickles down throughout all the staff that we have had contact with. Our middle-schooler with disabilities has an incredible support system and is thriving thanks to this amazingly supportive school. Their use of Canvas for classwork keeps us in the know about exactly what is happening academically. Their balance of working social-emotional skills and communication skills into the curriculum shows in the students we’ve met. Also in our experience, with any concern there is reciprocal communication and proactive problem-solving between the school and parents. This is a great group of caring open-minded people with strong leadership.

There have been several incidents we were aware of, that so many parents were not because it was poor PR to bring it to their attention? We aren't sure. They tend to sweep things under the rug in our opinion. It could even be good things that would help make a more cohesive team between teacher, student, and parent. Like, explanations of standardized test scores. Parents have to specifically ask... why? Then we find out, teachers don't actively use the scores for anything unless extremely low/high... hopefully they do now. The teachers are also hit & miss, so cross your fingers your kid gets one of the 'good' ones that follows old standards versus the 'new' way of doing things! It's pretty bad and not cohesive at all. Then, when things are pointed out, parents are not experts - they are at the school! We also noted some kids no longer going to this school and parents telling us, don't worry it gets better at the next school. Really? Our kid won't be discriminated against by the staff at the next school? Peachy... Which, it's weird policies are so different, since McFarland only has 4 schools within the district. As it turns out, they were all run separately. Separate policies, separate management, etc. They are attempting to improve that now, however we haven't seen much difference. That's why I gave it a 2, not a 1... they are trying.We're under the impression it'll improve over the next 10 years since there has been a lot of management changes. That's great, but too late for our children. We'll just have to do the best we can and supplement at home.
