My just graduated from this school. I never had any issues.I love all the teachers and the counselor.

In freshman courses there are no books. History is taught using pdfs that say things like no party had a moral high ground in WWII. In math there is no book, the preparation for standardized tests consists of the teacher sitting by herself waiting for questions. In French there is no book, just a bunch of copied pages. The teachers seem to be on the left side of the political spectrum. Tests are typically multiple choice because they use Scantrons for the teacher convenience.

Our child went to Milnes for K-3 before we moved to Ridgewood. The teachers ranged from super engaged and enthusiastic to mellow and distracted, though all seemed competent. The math curriculum (Everyday Math) is absurd and unhelpful, and is the primary reason for 3 star rating. It has been abandoned by most other districts in NJ, yet Fair Lawn persists… The curriculum employs nonstandard techniques for solving basic problems and philosophical questions for which written answers are demanded (e.g., in 1st grade: how do you know 5+3 equals 8?). Google it. A supplemental program will probably be necessary if you want your child to be competent in basic arithmetic. The amount of homework is a little intense—far more than we’re seeing in Ridgewood. Not sure at this point whether that is a pro or con.The other significant downside here is that Milnes feeds to Thomas Jefferson middle school. The annual NJ state reports show an abnormally high number of bullying incidents at that middle school relative to most other schools in NJ, and this seems to align with what reviews on greatschools say as well as some pretty unpleasant bullying activities that have occurred in the area, including at Berdan park. If we were to stay in Fair Lawn we would have moved to a school that feeds into Memorial middle school, which seems to have fewer issues.
