I've been a substitute teacher at CPS for 2 years. I have observed every demographic and grade level. I felt compelled to write a review after substitute teaching a kindergarten class at Heffern. I cannot compliment the gym teacher enough! Mrs. Rathers-Clark was the kind of teacher that every teacher should observe and reflect. She did a lesson with spaceships that involved teamwork and a hula hoop that called for personal space. She had students stretch and line up, then dance as a class for a warm-up before her lesson started. She was always in control of her classroom management, every student was engaged and it was a pleasure watching such great teaching.

The previous reviews were written before this year. This is the first year that Marshall is a turnaround school and they are making INCREDIBLE strides. Their attendance rate is up by nearly 25%, their hallways are clean and safe, the building has been re-habbed, the new staff is providing top notch instruction in the classrooms, and more students than ever are now involved in co-curricular activities and sports. I will not be surprised if test scores increase dramatically and if a ton more students go to college. Marshall is on its way back to its glory days of being one of the best schools in the nation because of terrific students, a committed staff, incredible alumni and parent support, and the hope that Waiting for Superman inspires. Go Marshall!
