7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBest school in the district. This school is a Title 1 school with an underserved population that exceeds the diversity of other schools in the district. This school is ranked number five in the whole state for schools with similar demographics. There is an equity team that addresses disparities regularly, teachers differentiate to reach all students, and bias reporting is made easily available by the school’s administration so that all incidents of bias can be addressed immediately, whether that bias involves poverty, disability, LGBTQIA, race, or something else. The rating given to this school by Great Schools is not reflective of the school at all. This is a school with high poverty and with fewer white kids than the other schools in this district, with kids who are often from households who aren’t as available as more wealthy families in Bend due to financial disparities. The teachers, therefore, must fill in those gaps and address problems not seen much in kids from wealthier families in the district. Kids learn coding from kindergarten on, using a hand-on approach—not just screens. They use storyline in first grade, have a yearly film festival, have a coding competition, engage in Battle of the Books, and have a rocket activity for fourth graders. Students use stop motion to describe their learning process and become their own teachers and lifetime learners. This is the best school in the district, with staff members who constantly collaborate to reach all students on an individual level. This school has an on-site counselor and specialists to address behavioral and learning needs. Bullying is not tolerated, and teachers work tirelessly to engage students in meaningful activities that will enrich their learning. The music program is great, and students have a library with a reading well—the only one in the district. There is a yearly Walk-A-Thon, and health and well being for all students is a priority. Best school in the district by far. Also, the school grounds are gorgeous and there are several buildings that allow for a lot of outdoor time. Outdoor play is scenic and not flat like other schools. It’s right next to Pilot Butte! Teachers and staff have a great working relationship, with minimal conflict—and this shows a lot. Best school in the district by far.Parent Review2y ago - Pilot Butte Middle School

"This area has many road access options and is close to everything without congestion or noise. The police station is right up the road and Ponderosa Park, which is in our neighborhood, is patrolled often so it feels like a plus for safety. The people in this neighborhood are good family people and look out for each other. I know that if I need anything I can, and sometimes do, ask for help, and I help them as well. Easy drive to drop off the kids at school as well as Juniper swim and fitness, shopping, etc. Large lots with well developed trees and variation in how the houses are situated on the properties so there's privacy and doesn't look like the new cookie-cutter neighborhoods with tiny square flat lots & neighbors towering over your yard. "We live here and close to (but not too close). the east side public library, Costco, Safeway, Mothers, Long board Louie's, Worthy, Barnes and Noble and all kinds of other shopping on the east side. "

"I live in this area and find it to be convenient yet quiet. All of our neighbors know each other and have many opportunities to have conversation, even with those who live a few streets away while they walk their dogs. I wouldn't want to live here if I were concerned about alot of privacy or throwing parties as I did a few years ago, but it's perfect for our lifestyle now."

"Because I value my health above all else, I chose Gardenside as my neighborhood. Here, it's easy to get sunshine, fresh air and plenty of exercise -- I walk out the door and indulge not only complete safety in the neighborhood, but also on the many trails (along the beautiful canal and in the BLM). The inspiring views of the Cascades also entice me outdoors! Also, from here, I can walk to the neighborhood farm (Field's Farm) for fresh produce all year around (they have a commercial green house). Many of my neighbors love to walk, too, so it's easy to find friends to join me. As for weather, I like the micro climate here in Gardenside - more sun and much less snow and ice than on Bend's westside. As for a healthy social life and community, the middle of the Gardenside neighborhood is a well-maintained park with a lovely stone-and-timber Pavillion -- a great place to meet with friends, family and neighbors for BBQ, playing our musical instruments, indulging conversation, relaxing with a good book, or meeting with our laptops. Neighbors here really look out for each other and take good care of each other. That means a lot to me. As for getting out and about ... Since I'm only 3 miles from the Old Mill District and Bend's (charming) downtown, I waste no time fighting traffic to get to the art galleries, restaurants, theater, symphony and the nationally acclaimed Friday Art Walks. Of all the places I've lived in the US, I've been happiest (and healthiest!) while living in Gardenside."
