About this House

Welcome to The Cherokee Lodge, a rare and distinguished historic estate built in 1890 by Annie Ravenel, a notable figure in the golden age of refined mountain hospitality. As Tryon rose to prominence as an elite mountain retreat and health destination-drawing travelers seeking rejuvenation, fresh air, and elegance—this remarkable home stood as a welcoming lodge for discerning guests. Today, it remains one of the town’s architectural treasures. Offering 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, and just under 4,000 square feet, this home seamlessly blends historic grandeur with elevated comfort. The current owners have thoughtfully stewarded the property as both a cherished family gathering place and a sanctuary for fine antiques, ensuring every update honored the home’s original character while subtly enhancing livability with modern heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing. Entering through the stained-glass front door is a moment unto itself. Rich hardwood floors, intricate moldings, and exquisite craftsmanship immediately convey a level of quality impossible to replicate. Three original fireplaces anchor inviting gathering spaces, ideal for intimate evenings, refined entertaining, or welcoming guests. The expansive, eat-in kitchen has a large island with storage and a plethora of cabinetry. A walk-up attic presents exceptional flexibility, offering the opportunity to create an additional guest suite, game room, or studio- the possibilities are endless. With its gracious bedroom count, square footage, and walkable location, the property is uniquely positioned for a multitude of uses. Outdoors, mountain views and a sweeping wraparound porch invite you to slow down and unwind. All of this is just a short stroll to excellent dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment. Designed and built long before mass production, this home stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail of that era. • Barbara C.
"We have a large community of horse owners. Lots of unemployed former textile workers - and beautiful hill country and a large population of retirees. Low traffic. "
  • Barbara C.
"It’s a country small town. Little transport but also very little traffic. Easy to drive around. A variety of hone styles and sizes - some farms near some relaxed neighborhoods. "
  • Dan
"Nearly everyone around here has animals. You see people walking their dogs all the time. Dogs are always welcome in most establishments. "
  • Dan
"The community has events on all the holidays: Christmas, New Years, Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving. "
  • Barbara C.
"You must have a car to live in the foothills. Public transport is minimal at best and expensive - and relatively infrequent. "
  • b Clarke
"It’s a horse community with lovely mountains and little shops and winding roads. It’s quite full of retirees and equally populated by lifetime residents. It does not take long to feel at home. "
  • Dan
"I don’t commute anywhere. I work at home. People need a car to get around here. I use to work 30 miles away. "
  • Jbaclarke
"This is a semi-rural area. Most homes are outside the city limits and are an acre or more. Many homes are mobile homes and the rest of one story single family dwellings. As such, most homeowners are not considered part of a community - and tend to celebrate or socialize with friends either from church or from the local horse community. "
  • Maryhurleylee
"it's beauty is outstanding nestled in the foothills of the blue Ridge Mountains, Charming and quaint! "
  • Lane R.
"Beautiful area with lots of horse farms and vintage Tryon homes. Close to town yet you feel as if you are very far away. Many homes have mountain views with ample acreage with pastures and wooded settings. I like the area so much I own a rental property in the area. I consider very desirable location."
  • Wcumming
"Tryon is a quiet, friendly town with low crime and great community involvement. Vibrant downtown, good local shops and services and within 25 miles of three large cities for shopping and entertainment."
  • Amy P.
"Amazing schools. As a foreign service family we move often and send our kids to many schools. Polk county ranks at the top for us. Both kids are thriving here academically and socially. The town is safe and clean and our kids enjoy a level of freedom and independence unheard of these days. We love it. "
  • johnh
"Lived in tryon for some time. I moved back north. Not a very friendly community. Best if you have strong ties here. People originally from around this area feel as if people moving here is not good for them. Poor economy. Businesses constantly failing. And it is true there is an alcohol problem as many people are bored and unhappy in tryon especially people under 50 or so. Not a good place for children. This town should also be red flagged as a gang stalking community. Ideal for retirees who don't go out much."
