What happened to this 2nd grader, Eli, is heartbreaking and unacceptable.Quail Glen is his family’s home school. They live directly across the street, and Eli’s younger sister attends first grade here. Yet about 16 hours before the first day of school, his father received a call saying there was suddenly no room for Eli.Imagine having to tell a 7 year old the night before his first day of second grade that he may not be able to attend the school he expected to attend with his little sister.His father still brought him on the first day, wanting his son to have the normal first-day experience he had been looking forward to. He was then told Eli would be removed from the classroom and made to sit in the office. His father had to firmly object because he did not want his child singled out or made to feel as though he had done something wrong.Then, Eli ended up crying in the school office. Instead of an exciting first day, this family was left confused and devastated.Ultimately, Eli was sent to another school. His family now has two elementary-aged children attending two different schools, with different start times and separate drop-offs, despite living directly across the street from Quail Glen.What is especially troubling is the communication. His father says he was assured another student would not simply take Eli’s place. Yet he later saw another child’s name assigned to the desk he understood to have been Eli’s. When he questioned this, the response focused on the fact that he was not permitted to take a photograph rather than meaningfully addressing his concern.I understand schools have enrollment limits and policies. But there is no excuse for communicating something this significant to a family only hours before the first day of school and handling it in a way that leaves two young children crying.Eli did nothing wrong. He is a second grader who simply wanted to go to his neighborhood school with his sister. His father is Ukrainian and has been left feeling deeply mistreated by this experience. I cannot speak to the school’s motives, but his concerns and the way this family was treated deserve to be taken seriously.Children may not remember enrollment policies, but they remember how adults made them feel. Eli deserved a happy first day of second grade. His sister deserved to walk into school excited to have her brother there with her. This family deserved transparency, compassion, and adequate notice. They deserved better.
