Competition is pretty high as the town (Davis) is a small community with a very large University of California campus, and thus is filled with parents who have advanced degrees and very high academic standards. I suspect academically weaker students will feel this, but on the other hand academically talented students will have the opportunity to excel. We've been positively impressed with the teachers we've had (with one notable exception, and she's no longer employed in Davis schools). The real draw here is the high education level and community involvement of the parents who send their kids here. Those characteristics and values are evident in the kids at Korematsu, and that makes the teachers' ability to push a class of kids further along academically that much greater.
