In the 19th century, the house became the Summer home of Rebecca Gratz of the of the wealthy and philanthropic Philadelphia family. It is said that Rebecca entertained such luminaries as Washington Irving and Sir Walter Scott here in Wallingford. The second 2nd Empire wing was finally completed circa 1875 when the property passed to Alfred Gillette, the owner / publisher of the Philadelphia Times. In 1895 the kitchen and service wing was added to the rear of the original structure and in the 1920s a glass sunporch and modern 2 bay garage completed the additions to the home. Painted in historic Hawthorne Yellow with striking Black shutters and intricate white scrollwork framing the wrap around porch, this house sits on Providence Road as a notable landmark. Through the impressive front doors, you’ll enter into a grand foyer with a formal sitting room off to the right. Bathed in natural light with a high ceiling and original hardwood floors, this impressive room features the first of five fireplaces as a focal point centered between two glass doored entries to a sunporch. The oldest section of the home has a cozier feel with the living room showcasing another fireplace and access to both the front porch and the second sun porch. The back au pair suite is separated by a door and consists of a bedroom with a laundry room off to the side, direct access to an office or play space and a large back bedroom. The next half level up is the primary bedroom with high ceilings, a fireplace with Franklin stove insert, and an en suite bathroom with heated floors and a clawfoot tub / shower. The third level is an oversized flex space that could be used a guest room, home office, or play room. The fourth level has an equally large flex space, another bedroom, and a walk-in storage area. The upper levels provide plenty of space for work from home owners. The home sits on an acre with mature landscaping that provides both beauty and privacy. The curved driveway and oversized two car garage allow for plenty of parking for guests. 41 S Providence is within walking distance to the award winning Strath Haven schools in the Wallingford – Swarthmore school district as well as the Helen Kate Furness Free Library. The principal is incredible, she knows every single child almost immediately, and recognizes parents within the first week. She is incredibly dedicated to the children, as are the teachers. My son loves this school so much and looks forward to school every day! There are great after school programs as well. 9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy experience at this school is a mixed bag, on one hand it's very clean, has good and experienced teachers (depending), has a diverse staff and student body, has some very good opportunities, and cares a lot about extra cariculars. On the other hand, bullying is not taken very seriously, fights happen often, students vape often and occasionally smoke weed in the bathrooms and in class, phone policy is not very strict, and advanced English options are sorely lacking. But overall it is (in my opinion) a good environment for the average child and may be a bad fit for a seriously advanced student.Student Review1y ago - Strath Haven High School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI received a good education, but there are very clearly race disparages between black students and white students. When a white student skips school, there is an intervention. But when a black or Hispanic kid skips they receive no correction. Most of the staff is white so there's very few fresh perspectives, and administration claims to do things about bullying but you have to get parents and the school board involved. They even lied to the police about documentation in a stalking case between two students in an effort to sweep it under the rug. The academics are good if you know where to look but the school does not directly advertise it to the student body so there's a large percentage of the student body just trying to catch up. Also, this website says that the school's AP program is open to all and while that's true, it's all white kids and maybe an Asian kid here and there. The school also purposefully takes pictures of its students of color to make Strath Haven look integrated. Also, the special education system is truly diabolical here. There is no protection for those students and it is hidden from public view. I actually didn't know we had a special education program because it's tucked away in the back of the school and the alternate room is truly just a glorified closet. Oh and here's the kicker, I can't upload this review using my school email because our admins blocked it. And a lot of the students here don't have a personal email until like senior year for college reasons, so it's just oppression.Student Review1mo ago
