5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageHanes isn't a perfect school, but some of the reviews on this site are not accurate. I'm a teacher at Hanes. The previous review that claimed HAG students got a field trip to go bowling "just because" is not true. Every time there is an olympics, our school has a STEM olympics. All homerooms compete. Of the homerooms that medaled for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, 4 of the 10 (there were ties) were not HAG and the 8th grade gold winners who went on the bowling field trip were not HAG. The student from the previous review was likely a 6th grader, because of the reference to pods, and if that student continues at Hanes, hopefully their continued experience will further bring the schools' better lights into view. The teachers at Hanes are by and large dedicated to helping their students succeed, whether HAG or not. We offer more afterschool activities than any other middle school I know of. We frequently bring in community members to engage with students during the regular course of the day. If you want your student to receive an outstanding STEM education, there's no place better in this area to my knowledge.Teacher Review2y ago - Old Town Elementary

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son went to this elementary school from K-5 and he absolutely loved it. The teachers really care for the students and I feel really can give the students a one on one approach if needed because of the class sizes. Their SOAR philosophy really fosters an environment of respect and goodwill towards other classmates and teachers so no fear of bullying at this school. Things that would make this school better would be if they could figure out some way of making it better for parents to be more involved and better streamlining parent assemblies, although I believe the new principal is working on that. Overall, a pretty great schoolParent Review10y ago - Virtual Academy

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI taught at this school for many years and have nothing but positive things to say about the students, parents, and staff members. I am filled with pride when I think about my time at the school and miss teaching there very much. The students are challenged academically and held to high standards, but they generally rise to and exceed these standards. The college professors in particular will hold the kids to account, and it shows in their development both as students and individuals. If you want your child to develop a strong work ethic, feel supported by both their peers and teachers, and grow into thoughtful, respectful, and diligent individuals, send them to this school! Please be mindful that this school is not for everyone. Students will be enrolled in college courses immediately and this has proven to be difficult for some individuals. The school also does not offer after-school sports (students can still participate, just at their neighborhood school), however there is an abundance of clubs on various days that almost all students participate in. Parents also need to understand that micromanaging their students' coursework is a no-go here. College professors sometimes outright refuse to speak with parents as they only communicate with the students themselves. Don't be turned off by this - it simply encourages the students to learn how to speak to their professors when they need help (questions, extensions, etc). In my opinion, this is one of the most important life skills that is taught at the school. That being said, parents are still a HUGE part of the Early College family and are encouraged to volunteer whenever possible. The school provides ample opportunities for families to get involved and participate in their kids' high school experience. I truly loved my experience here. I am so proud of my students and I had so much fun watching them develop into incredible, thoughtful, intelligent, and creative individuals.Teacher Review7mo ago - Check out schools near 3620 Yarbrough Ave #G.
