2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageDo NOT send your child here. I wanted to make a difference as a teacher so I chose a title 1 school. They set these children up for failure. As a former teacher here, these students who should be held back are just being passed. This school is a joke and a disgrace to public education. Teachers are not allowed to give below a 50 so if you child doesn't turn anything in for the entire school year they still pass. They dont believe holding back a child does any good and that is coming directly from the principal when i wanted to hold half my class back. I taught 5th grade math and science. I had atleast 10 students each year (mind you I only stayed for 2 and 1/2 years) who couldn't read and couldn't add/subtract. How do you teach 3 digit multiplication and 4 by 2 digit division when a child can't add and subtract. According to standards taught, Addition and subtraction should be mastered before the end of 2nd grade otherwise you are just setting that child up for failure and increasing the high school drop out rate. How do you prepare them for the eog if they can't read to be able to tell whether a problem is addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. They need to start this school completely from scratch and honestly get north carolina education board involved to reshape this school. Hire teachers that actually care about your child's learning and wants them to succeed verses oh well let the next grade figure it out.Teacher Review11mo ago - R B Glenn High

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI too am a parent that has a daughter at Philo. When school first started , i was siting at a dentist appt. and an older lady just wanting to talk said hi, your son looks like he is very smart this was my 4 yr. old I said thank you, he is. Well the conversation went on and she asked where do your children go to school and i said Philo. As soon as i said that her demeanor changed. And she said i had a grandson there and plzz i ask of you to look out for your daughter, my grandson was a great student and when he entered there he did a complete u turn he went down hill. And of course i was worried but i thought i would give this school a try ... SO HERE I AM GIVING THIS SCHOOL THE WORST GRADE I CAN GIVE IT A 1 . NOT HAPPY MY DAUGHTER ALSO CHANGED AND I KNOW WHY IT'S BECAUSE OF PHILO !! PLEASE PARENTS LOOK AROUND IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE DON'T DO WHAT I DID!! MY DAUGHTER IS MOVING SCHOOLS AS I AM TYPING THIS :)Parent Review10y ago - Virtual Academy

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI taught at this school for many years and have nothing but positive things to say about the students, parents, and staff members. I am filled with pride when I think about my time at the school and miss teaching there very much. The students are challenged academically and held to high standards, but they generally rise to and exceed these standards. The college professors in particular will hold the kids to account, and it shows in their development both as students and individuals. If you want your child to develop a strong work ethic, feel supported by both their peers and teachers, and grow into thoughtful, respectful, and diligent individuals, send them to this school! Please be mindful that this school is not for everyone. Students will be enrolled in college courses immediately and this has proven to be difficult for some individuals. The school also does not offer after-school sports (students can still participate, just at their neighborhood school), however there is an abundance of clubs on various days that almost all students participate in. Parents also need to understand that micromanaging their students' coursework is a no-go here. College professors sometimes outright refuse to speak with parents as they only communicate with the students themselves. Don't be turned off by this - it simply encourages the students to learn how to speak to their professors when they need help (questions, extensions, etc). In my opinion, this is one of the most important life skills that is taught at the school. That being said, parents are still a HUGE part of the Early College family and are encouraged to volunteer whenever possible. The school provides ample opportunities for families to get involved and participate in their kids' high school experience. I truly loved my experience here. I am so proud of my students and I had so much fun watching them develop into incredible, thoughtful, intelligent, and creative individuals.Teacher Review7mo ago - Check out schools near 2721 Ludwig St.
