We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Blackshear Elementary. My child has truly blossomed here both academically and socially. The curriculum is thoughtful, challenging, and engaging, with a strong emphasis on learning and growth at every level.What really sets Blackshear apart, though, is the community. The teachers are warm, dedicated, and deeply invested in the success of each student. The parent community is just as welcoming and supportive, creating a true sense of partnership in our children’s education.Blackshear offers the best of both worlds: a rigorous academic environment within a nurturing, inclusive atmosphere. We feel so fortunate to be part of this school.

The success on the magnet program is more a consequence of a very motivated student population with involved parents. There are some very strong teachers at Kealing, but there are also teachers who don't teach and rely on videos and cultivate an atmosphere of rigor through an excessive amount of homework rather than truly challenging the students. This is especially true of math where busywork reigns supreme and instruction is at a minimum. Math teachers overuse videos and there are no textbooks but abundant worksheets and weekend deadlines. The school provides little in the way of social emotional support during a time of life when these kids really, really need it. My children have witnessed and experienced bullying from other students and neglect from teachers; in a school with a lesser academic reputation these would be flagged but, given the high test scores, are largely ignored. I would warn parents of sensitive and/or anxious children to look elsewhere.

This is one of the best schools is Austin! I hope it continues to do great as it has been these past few years!
