The Zanja was built by the Serrano people in 1819 as an irrigation canal to provide water for what is today Redlands. It is the oldest civil engineering project in Southern California and was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1932 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The Zanja flows almost continually every year (except for times in Winter when it rains and the orchards downstream don’t need it). Two custom-built bridges lead over the creek to the front patio of this ranch-style masterpiece, built by an architect and student of the Frank Loyd Wright style. From the patio and deck, steps lead down the creek bank. A breezeway separates the private guest suites from the main house and leads to a cozy back patio and hillside retreat. The property includes two lots, shaded by a great more-than-150-year-old live oak. Explore the grounds and discover an olive tree, citrus trees, and African sumac. Or sit and enjoy a peaceful afternoon by the water while you listen to the brook babbling over the rocks.

The exterior of the house is finished with redwood paneling. Large eaves shade the double-paned windows, providing respite from the sun on hot days. Inside, see the open-beam high-ceiling living room and dining room and a central stone fireplace. The living area features a cozy drop ceiling. The kitchen is equipped with a gas range, original cabinets, and original Formica countertops. Prepare meals with a view of the creek. The master bedroom features a walk-in closet. The private guest suites are equipped with a shower. Other features include a two-car carport with an enclosed room used for work and storage. The spacious side yard is a separate lot that can potentially be used as a garden, additional storage, recreation, or more! Hike or bike the Santa Ana River Trail, Crafton Hills Ridge Trail, Dump Trail, Gold Trail, and Regional Park Trail. Not many street lights in our neighborhood which is nice at night cause it allows you to better see the stars, down side walking at night street isn’t lit up.
