Description

S. Brown Shepherd did his homework. The prominent Raleigh attorney had purchased a beautiful, estate-sized lot for his family's new home, and given the complexity of his project, Shepherd needed a construction dream team. He entrusted the design to renowned architect James Salter, whose portfolio included the Eure House, Olds Elementary, and the Sir Walter Hotel. To realize Salter's vision, Shepherd teamed with James Davidson, one of Raleigh's finest builders, best known for constructing the Cox-Williams house (''Mount Vernon'') in Hayes Barton, White Memorial Church, and Pine State Creamery. Completed in 1928, this landmark home has belonged only to a handful of families, each stewarding its original beauty and craftsmanship. One of the home's most unique and beguiling features is its da Vinci-esque octagonal foyer (the famed artist obsessively incorporated the shape into his architectural drawings), which serves as both the visual and functional hub of the home. The current owners faithfully carried the torch with a sharp kitchen renovation, a stunning lighting package from Visual Comfort, and a sweeping backyard transformation complete with saltwater pool. For those yearning for the irreplicable character of an historic home, you'll find it here.©

What Locals Say about Five Points

"Traffic in Raleigh is awful. Infrastructure is far behind growth. And the local government is totally incompetent."

"Nice neighborhood to walk your dog, just be courteous and clean up after your pup! Also, drivers around here have a hard time paying attention—the roads are very narrow."

"loads of kids and adult social events. Halloween parade. Easter egg hunts. Adult progressive dinners. Parties at the community salt water pool. All the kids playing in the communal play fields, alleys, and cul-de-sacs. The whole neighborhood is a playground! "

  • Nakia A.
"Great green spaces. The older houses have better space between them. People are buying these older homes on large lots and building super large houses which eat up the yard space and make the houses very close together. If you have kids the will have to play in the house, or the front yard nearer the street or you will have to take them to the park which is not very far. If you tear down and rebuild pick a house that will fit on your lot and still allow enough space that you can’t borrow sugar from your neighbor just by reaching out the window. "

"Yes, I do live here and I am seriously looking into moving. There are two nightclubs located on Paula st. that play there very loud music 7 days a week. You cannot sleep because of the bass, you cannot concentrate because of the loud music til 3.00 am,the police have given them many, many tickets,we as a neighborhood have gone to city of Raleigh without any success. If you do not want to be sleep deprived, high anxiety, stress etc do not move to this neighborhood."
