Description

Cozy one-bedroom Berkeley cabin available for immediate sublet through May 31, 2021, suitable for 1-2 people. The landlady will be renting out the apartment to her friend in June, so there will not be any option to extend or renew the lease. Couples are welcome, as are roommates who are comfortable with one person staying in the bedroom and the other staying in the living room. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed unless they are registered support animals. Street parking is available with a J Permit - easily obtainable through the DMV.

The unit is a one-bedroom apartment with a separate living room, kitchen and dining area, bedroom, and full bathroom with a shower-tub. The bathroom is connected to the bedroom. Outside is a spacious deck (exclusive for the tenant's use) with a redwood tree growing through it, and the cabin itself is nestled in a small redwood grove. Although it is surrounded by trees, there is still lovely afternoon light courtesy of large windows in every room and a skylight in the living room. The unit is unfurnished, but a full-size bed and mattress is available, as well as a large white armoire. These can be removed prior to your move-in if you would prefer a truly unfurnished apartment. There are a gas stove, medium-sized refrigerator, and gas heater as appliances.

The cabin is part of a two-cabin duplex located in the backyard of a house (filled with friendly undergraduate folks) in a safe residential side street near the CVS on Telegraph Ave. There is a laundromat about 2.5 blocks away, and both Berkeley Bowl and Whole Foods are within walking distance. The cabin is a quick drive (about 5 minutes) to highway 24, which offers a quick commute to the other side of the hill, San Francisco, or downtown Oakland.

The rent is $1600 starting February 1 and utilities (PG&E) come out to $40 in warm months and up to $80 in cold months. The unit is available for an immediate move-in with free rent for the remaining days of January. Wifi is currently shared with the next door neighbors (a sweet literary couple in their late twenties/early thirties) for $20 per month, though you would be welcome to set up your own if you prefer. The two cabins share an adjoining wall and some noise comes through, but the neighbors are kind and open to any issues that may come up regarding it. It is still a cozy cabin in a quiet yard and neighborhood; however, the unit may not be suited for someone in need of absolute silence throughout the work day.

Please reach out if you can commit to renting the cabin from February through May 2021. Last month's rent, as well as a $1,000 security deposit, are due at signing. Rent is due the first of every month over Venmo or another electronic payment service. Happy to work out a full pay-up front scenario if that is preferred. You would be subletting the apartment from a Berkeley Law 3L who relocated to the east coast due to COVID, but you would be given the cabin owner's contact information for the rare event that issues arise. Both the cabin owner and the sublandlord are very responsive and helpful.

Happy to send out a recorded video tour, and in-person visits can be scheduled with strong considerations for COVID safety (mask, social distancing). Open houses are available from 12-4 pm on Saturdays, and please RSVP at least a couple hours ahead of time by emailing the provided Craigslist contact info.

"The neighborhood is super friendly great people great environment love living in the bay. It is a really nice place. I would not want to live anywhere else."
  • Trulia User
"you see people with all walks of dogs around. most are considerate with picking up with their dogs but you do have to watch out as well."
  • Trulia User
"Great access to public transit, both bus and BART, with good bikes lanes as well. There is also a ferry in the Berkeley marina"
  • Trulia User
"The residents are nice people and there’s a good number of kids. But there are often transients walking through the area."
  • Nayana S.
"Great place to take dogs around as this place is lot like homely and much green bushes. I have seen many dogs walking in the neighbourhood "
  • Torrence P.
"Lots of things to see and do. Diverse and vibrant. It does get loud at night. Public transportation is excellent. "
  • Sara M.
"Lots of students in the area because of the proximity to UC Berkeley. Its also a very political area, marches and cops and helicopters are not uncommon in response to the political climate. "
  • Poppop g. a. t.
"I lived in this neighborhood for 3 years. Since it's just south of the UC Berkeley campus, there is a lot of foot traffic and noise when school is in session. Mostly students live in this neighborhood but there are a ton of homeless people lying on the sidewalks and they can get pretty aggressive. Plenty of cheap restaurants catering to students as well."
  • Rolf
"Great walkable neighborhood with lovely historical homes. Very diverse community."
  • Rolf
"Berkeley has high property taxes with the outcome of good public services and excellent schools. This part of south Berkeley is bicycle friendly with great grocery stores (perhaps the best options in the State!) plus neighbors who walk and know each other. A very enjoyable & diverse neighborhood."
  • Misha
"A perfect 10-15 minute walk to the Cal Campus or the upscale, but delicious Elmwood area. Animal friendly neighborhood, with a fairly strong neighborhood association. The Julia Morgan Theater and Benvenue Public Library as well as excellent schools are just some of the treasures of this area."
