The staff is nice, but they have no understanding of how to execute 504 plans for students with learning disabilities. Their communication with parents of children on 504 plans is nonexistent. Teachers do not provide proper accommodations to the students. Teachers expect the students to handle all communication to their parents as if they are adults. Things get lost in translation then the school blames the student and parents. Also they blame the state for not providing enough support for special needs students. Which might hold some truth, but there is no reason not to communicate with parents.

My daughter is on her first year at Spillane Middle. Within the first week she forgot her badge, right away it’s a $1 fine. No grace period, no letting the kids get use to wearing a badge, you pay them or the kid gets punished. A couple weeks later she forgot her badge at her mother’s house witch is over 20 miles away. You have to pay $5 for a new one and can’t reuse the old one once the new one is active, so if it’s lost or forgot again, it’s $5 again. Kids get automatic detention for being tardy in the mornings due to things like fatal crashes on highway 290 blocking the way to school. My daughter was 5 minutes late for the first time in 11 weeks of school and was put into detention for being stuck behind a fatal crash that was in the news and as of now the school refuses to remove or correct it. You are better off waiting to do a late check in or let the kid miss the day so they don’t get detention. My daughter was sent home from school due to have a 100 degree fever, which is fine. The problem was it was the last week of the 9 weeks and she had test. She has not been given a grade for her Science DPM and took a couple of days for her LA/RDG test grade to update from an “F” that the school gave her to the “A” that she truly earned. My daughter is an honor student and it’s hard to work with the school, I can only image how hard it is for kids already having a hard time with school. Spillane policies are very much put all effort into fines and punishments and no effort into understanding the kids. The school really needs to rethink how hard they are on the students and relax on some of the small stuff.

My son is doing very well academically, socially, and emotionally.
