About this House
Move into this charming New England salt-box style home located within walking distance of Terraset Elementary school, Langston Hughes Middle school and South Lakes High school. Also within walking distance is Ridge Heights swimming pool, which is one of only a couple Reston pools that is heated and can stay open late into the fall. Rounding out this great location is the Old Westbury park, with a large open field for sports and an fence enclosed play area that includes a slide, rocker and a jungle gym. A short 1/2 mile away along scenic Lake Thoreau is the South Lakes shopping center with a great selection of restaurants with lake views, a UPS store, a Starbucks, and a Safeway.
Perhaps the best aspect of living in Old Westbury (in addition to the perfect location) is the neighborhood of Cobblestone Lane. The owners of this property have been a part of Cobblestone since 2008, and have made lifelong friends out of many of the families who live there. There is a wonderful mix of girls and boys, of all ages (newborn all the way to 15 year olds), who all know each other and spend a large amount of time outdoors with other resident kids. There is a vibrant street scene in the warmer months where parents come out to play corn-hole, quoits, ping pong, shuffleboard, and even pickleball. For singles, or those who don't have children, this house is at the end of the street, so privacy can be had when or if needed. All tenants will be welcomed by this friendly neighborhood.
Located in the Old Westbury Cluster property (est. 1982) in Southern Reston, the property has seen significant upgrades over the last couple of years including plantation shutters on all front facing windows. In addition, all windows have been replaced with high quality, modern Okna windows with UV glass, and easy to remove windows (integrated, sandwiched grilles). These all help to significantly bring down heating/cooling costs and also keep outdoor noise from entering the house. Built in the 1980's this model home came with 3 flues, two of which enter the house as fireplaces, and the final basement opening being used by the superb wood stove which can heat the house on even the coldest nights.
Starting with the upstairs, many rooms have been renovated over the last year and a half and the entire floor features new carpeting and new paint on all walls.
On the upper floor, we have 2 spare bedrooms (A=12'1" x 9'11") and (B=10'11" x 16' 1") which have been repainted. A professionally installed Elfa shelving system is in the B bedroom and the A room has a professionally installed ClosetMaid closet, with plenty of space for clothes. Serving both of these rooms is a bathroom that was entirely gutted and completely renovated with subway tiling, a new modern vanity and mirror, storage cabinet, new bathtub and new faucet. Subway tiling goes up to the ceiling and moulds around the window framing. The bathtub is a modern 60" tub with a specially treated under surface, which reduces heat loss and allows the water to stay hotter longer. There is ample storage in the bathroom for medicines, toiletries and towels, along with a new and sleek looking faucet with matching accessories.
Continuing on is the smaller of the 2 spare bedrooms, but which was a perfect size for our newborn child, who spent the next 11 years in that room. There are 2 Umbra curtain rods, ready for any curtains you may choose (we recommend room darkening to completely shut out outside light). This room has windows on 2 walls including a view of the back of the house. The decent sized clothes closet (2' 10" x 2' 6") is made all the more spacious by a professionally installed ClosetMaid shelving system that adds 5 deep shelves of storage, plus a hanging rod almost 3' in length. The height was selected to fit most shirt and pant sizes, but it may be adjusted if required.
The 2nd spare bedroom is a more spacious 10' 11" x 16' 1" with a professionally installed Elfa storage system set into the wall so as to take up less space. Coupled with a dresser, this will allow the person in this room to have lots of storage space for clothes. The room is lightened in the daytime with 3 windows that have Plantation shutters for a classic look.
Down the hallway is the Master bedroom which has rope lighting tucked into lowered crown moulding for a dramatic feel. The Master bathroom was recently entirely gutted and renovated and features a Delta shower system with a 3 way diverter that serves the shower head, detachable shower wand, or both at once. and 1/4" thick shower glass. There is also a spacious linen alcove with more Elfa shelving (6 lit, deep shelves), a ceiling recessed light and rope lighting behind to illuminate it all. The ceiling of this room was outfitted with cedar bead board and recessed lighting giving it a Scandinavian spa-like feel.
Rounding out this luxurious Master bedroom is a huge walk-in closet with rope lighting to illuminate all back corners. On the opposite end of the room is a clothing storage closet with more rope lighting and Elfa shelves for off season clothing storage, or active use.
The hallway leading downstairs would be a dark area were it not for the skylight that helps brighten it up. In the event of a fire, a hallway smoke alarm contains a light that automatically comes on to illuminate the way to safety. The newly carpeted stairs leads into the front foyer, where, to the left is the dining room. The lighting in this room emulates the classic bronze lantern style found on posts throughout the neighborhood. This moderately sized room should be sufficient for most dining room tables (one can see all room measurements by looking at the pictures and finding the measurements which have been photoshopped in).
Connected to the dining room is the spacious kitchen with white cabinets and a black marble. All appliances are high quality with a stainless steel finish. The dishwasher is a new (2024) Bosch (SHP65CM5N) one that features wireless settings, The gas range is a new (2024) Samsung (NX60A6511SS) Smart Freestanding Gas Range with No-Preheat Air Fry & Convection in Stainless Steel, and the Refrigerator is Samsung (RF267AERS) with French Door and lower pull out freezer drawer). There is a smaller freezer located downstairs in the HVAC closet that can be used for overflow frozen items if needed. The backstops were all recently covered with a beautiful mesh tile pattern that modernizes the entire room. Hanging from the ceiling is a pot rack for all your pots and pans. When the house was inhabited, we had a Boos butcher block set underneath the pot rack - a similar layout might do you well!
In addition to all the storage space in the kitchen cabinetry, there is a very large walk-in pantry just a few steps away and down the hall.
Connected to the kitchen with a wide open design is the perfectly placed Family room bump out with a fireplace for those cold winter nights. On the windowless wall is a t.v. wall mount in case you have a large t.v. you would like to set up. Also in the walls is the wiring for a 5.1 stereo hookup - if needed. Another upgrade to this room is an RJ45 plug to hook up your t.v. to instead of using the sometime iffy wireless connection to your router. The owner was an IT expert and can assist in any setups. There are double doors in the Family room that lead out to a flagstone patio.
Going back to the hallway, directly in front of the food pantry is the guest bathroom with elegant Kohl bath fittings (and the room has a plantation shutter).
And then we move into the spacious Living room with multiple Plantation shuttered windows, a fireplace, and some new, high quality ProVia French Doors that lead out onto the flagstone patio.
Finally, we descend down the hallway stairs into the basement. The carpeting was put in and has seen very limited use, so is still in excellent shape. Numerous recessed lights illuminate the basement, and all highlight the small, but powerful woodstove that is framed by some beautiful stone work behind and under - all to contain the heat produced by the stove.
Connected to the main basement rec area is a smallish room that was used as an office by the owner. There are plenty of plugs in this room, and is where the Verizon Fios connection enters the house.
Next to the office is the basement bathroom which has a shower and linen storage. It's also newly painted.
Finally, down the hall from the Office is the Laundry room with a relatively new Maytag washer and dryer combination. Next to the washer is a utility sink. To accommodate moving boxes or just the extra stuff we all accumulate, there is a substantially sized, multi-level set of 3 heavy duty storage shelves. Measurements = 44" deep x 11 ft.' wide x 25" high (1st level) x 36" high (2nd level) x 19" high (3rd level).
The upgrades don't end there. In 2024, the HVAC unit was entirely replaced and now sports a TRANE XR-15/XL824 HVAC with a high end thermostat, wireless capable. Also in 2024, the Water heater was replaced with a high quality AO Smith 50 gallon unit.
