Description

Re-built around 1978 and again tastefully remodeled in the 2000's, this well cared for brown shingle style home is located in the famed Gourmet Ghetto in the Upper Shattuck Avenue District which is home to numerous restaurants, shops, top private schools and of course a short distance to UCB campus. There are wonderful outdoor activities located nearby in the East Bay Regional Parks and Berkeley shoreline. Nearly everything you need is within strolling distance. There are excellent public transportation and bike friendly streets. This home is less than a half mile from UCB campus and Berkeley BART station. A/C Transit bus line to downtown Oakland and San Francisco are available from Shattuck Ave and University Avenue.
This home has many updated modern amenities, a spacious floor plan on two levels, high vaulted ceilings, numerous skylights, wonderful oak cabinetry, lots of built-in storage space and hardwood floors giving off a warm ambiance and cheerful rooms! The kitchen patio doors open into the rear yard which faces south for a sunny exposure.
There are 2 bedrooms and 1 full bath and study/office area upstairs. The two gas fireplaces on the main level provide heat throughout the home. Downstairs is the main living area with a formal living room with gas fireplace, formal dining room with a gas fireplace, guest half restroom, and a gourmet kitchen. What makes the kitchen gourmet? How about a six burner gas range, professional range hood, a Bosch dishwasher, Dacor oven, Frigidaire refrigerator, double sink with granite counter top. Within the kitchen are a full set washer and dryer along with a huge floor to ceiling pantry. The home has approximately 1173 interior square feet situated on a lot of 2970 square feet. Storage space is abundant on both levels. Every space in this house is used wisely. This home feels much larger than the listed sqft mainly due to the great open floor plan and abundance of light from the use of skylights and arrangement of double pane windows. The professionally landscaped front and rear yards are gated for safety and privacy. There is a one vehicle parking pad directly in front of the entry. Street parking is available with a City parking permit.

"There is a long, excellent park for walks, which also has an off leash dog area. It’s really great to have so much space in a more urban area. "
  • Jorge A. S. L. O.
"It is urban. There hardly any grass anywhere by the sidewalks and where there is there are sometimes burs that will hurt your dogs paws."
  • Ashagrao
"The proximity to Bart and bike path as well as walkability to restaurants and stores is wonderful. The area is also quiet and family friendly with tons of parks around. "
  • Heliotropium
"Nice, quiet neighborhood with a (for the Bay area) tidy BART station. There's Ford Go Bikes here, and the bike trail through Berkeley runs through it. "
  • Theresa L.
"There is a dog park three blocks away and many quiet streets for walking on as well. Dogs are very welcome!"
  • Bueller4prez
"I lived here for 5 years and it's a great area for families. There are lots of resources and events for everyone: the farmer's markets, the schools are great, lots of daycare options and playgrounds for little ones. The student presence is diminished due to the high cost of living in this area, but not gone. The cultural vibe is similar to most of Berkeley, great most of the time with the occasional run-in with an entitled former hippy who elbows you out of the way to get at their organic melon at Monterey Market. For some reason, everyone thinks they can cross the street whenever and where ever they please. Otherwise a great area for food, evening strolls and hanging out with the family"

"I've lived here since 1987. Buying a home here was the best thing for me and my family. We live a 10 minute walk to North Berkeley BART and to great bus transportation on San Pablo Ave to both San Francisco and all parts of the East Bay. Our street is very quiet with good neighbors. Berkeley Adult school offers lots of interesting day, evening and weekend classes. Acme bakery has the best bread and Cafe Leila's outdoor patio and excellent food are always worth a visit. Monterey Market is not far and Solano Avenue and 4th Street shops are just a short drive. Cedar Rose park is also an easy walk for a children's play area and grassy fields for soccer, volleyball or just picnicking. Northwest Berkeley offers the best living for middle income families who want a safe, friendly, clean and accessible place to make their homes."
  • Bonnesante
"We moved here from San Francisco's Richmond District and in comparison, there leaves a lot to be desired. I am not accustomed to TRASH being littered everywhere. Little Caesar's pizza boxes and Popeye's trash is found everywhere around here. The worst is after garbage day, when people put whatever they want on the corner, hoping the garbage truck will haul it away but they don't, so it stays on the corner for weeks. Traffic on either University or San Pablo can be horrendous on weekends, so you need to be savvy about using side roads to get around by car or bike. Parking can also be a hassle, especialy when the Casa De Cultura has classes or events going on. On the positive side, I'm within walking distance to Fourth Street shopping, like Sur La Table, Benefit Cosmetics, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Anthropologie, and Paper Source. There are decent restaurants within walking distance, like La Mission, Kabana, Your Place Thai Cuisine, Priya Indian Cuisine, Lanesplitters Pizza, and others that I have not tried yet (Local 123, Luca Cucina Italiana, The Cheese Steak Shop). I'm within walking distance to 2 bars: Albatross Pub and Acme Bar so there's some nightlife around here. I've found that I can walk around the neighborhood safely, which is important as a young woman. There are bike routes nearby, which can take you to the Berkeley Marina, Emeryville, downtown Berkeley, or Albany in mere minutes. I also like being a 10 minute walk from North Berkeley BART station, since it beats sitting in traffic on I-80. It's not as clean (amazingly) as our old neighborhood and we're no longer a 10 minute walk from a national park like we once were, but we do like our new neighborhood, flaws and all. "

"I've lived in several locations around this area, for over twenty-five years total. I like it, but as far as 'safety,' there's more to safety than sheer violent crime, such as people who patronize the University/SanPable area shops, and wander around in the general area. You will definitely see more displaced and/or seedy individuals walking up and down Berkeley Way and Hearst - streets very near University, than on streets farther away. In addition there have been more real prostitute and drug rings on both streets over the last twenty-five years than farther away. My kids have tended to avoid those streets up to Sacramento - telling me about these things themselves over time. In general it's a safe area, but don't be too naive to believe the University and San Pablo corner doesn't influence things for the worse at times for nearby residents. "

"Within walking distance to multiple commercial areas, Shops, world-class food, parks, walking paths thru the hills, schools, etc. "
