Description

Bright and Sunny Apartment on Capitol Hill

Location, Location, Location

First let's start with the location of this apartment since location seems to be so important to so many people.

Bus service and metro could not be more convenient at this East Capitol St. location. Buses to the Capitol and to downtown sites like the White House and the GW Hospital stop will pick you up just across the street and for the return trip drop you off just a few steps from your apartment You can walk as I do to the Eastern Market Blue Line Metro in 14 minutes and the Blue Line Potomac and Stadium stations are even closer. If you want to get directly to a Red line you can catch the bus across the street or do as I do and simply walk across Lincoln and Stanton Parks right to the Union Station red line Metro.

Needless to say the vibrant social life is only a short distance away.... the outdoor cafes, the restaurants and if you want to hit the bars and wine bistros, you will have no need for a designated driver to take you home.

For grocery shopping you only have to walk down 14th Street to Safeway and just a little further to the Eastern Market Trader Joes. You can have a car in this neighborhood (parking is pretty easy in this part of the city) but the real fact is you do not need one. Transportation to everywhere is very convenient.

If you do have a car and have to use it a lot in your work, this neighborhood is the best in the city to quickly reach the 395 and 295 highways going south and the Baltimore Washington Parkway going north. Unlike other parts of the city, there is no need to traverse an elaborate gauntlet of streetlights to reach these major arteries.

And yes for you walkers, the Capitol is an easy stroll away and just beyond that the Washington Mall and the finest complex of museums anywhere in the world.

And lest I forget you readers and movie buffs, the two nearby pubic libraries are a great place to pick up a book or DVD that you can order online from the entire DC public library system. Perhaps you can see yourself popping out of the Eastern Market Metro after work, walking across the street to the library to pick up your preordered video, stopping by Trader Joes for a bottle of wine and your favorite cheese, and then walking home to enjoy the evening.

Also keep in mind that Lincoln Park, the largest and oldest park on Capitol Hill, is only a block and a quarter away.

Real estate people sometimes say that the three most important features of a home are Location, Location, Location. I say they are LIfestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle.

Bright and Sunny

OK. We have covered location well enough so now it's time to talk about the apartment itself. The apartment is located in a two unit building right on East Capitol Street. I live downstairs and I rent out the upstairs. Because it is located on the second floor and not in a basement or even a first floor, it is very sunny and bright. The apartment has been newly renovated for the second time. When you walk up the stairs the first thing you will see is a skylight with the original 100 year old stained glass. From the top of the stairs you look to the left and you will see a very large living room accented with a working fireplace framed with the original 100 year old fireplace mantel. You will notice that light pours into the room from three separate windows one of which stretches from floor to ceiling. You also will notice at one end of the room a Tiffany ceiling lamp that suggests the possibility of placing a table under it for formal dining or for working on special projects.

Turn to the right and the next room you will see the bathroom, newly renovated and with stainless steel shelves and drawers for sheets, towels and the many sundries people always need in a bathroom. Unless pointed out you might miss the infrared heater on the ceiling, a specialized kind of heater that is connected to a timer so you can program it to heat up the solid objects in the bathroom before you get up on a cold winter morning.

The next room is the first of two bedrooms, on the smaller side but plenty large for a double bed and a chest of drawers. It also makes a great office space which is what I use it for downstairs. You will notice an ample closet with a Swedish designed stainless steel closet system. But the most striking feature will be the cedar wood closet. It is very rare to see cedar closets even in the most expensive homes and even on uber-affluent Capitol Hill.

The next room will be a nice size master bedroom. Like the first bedroom it has a ceiling fan and like the first bedroom it boasts a large cedar lined closet with a Swedish Elfa closet system for maximum storage and flexibility. Over the years I have seen many houses and apartments on Capitol Hill with closets that for some reason unknown to me are just plain poorly designed.

So let's next go to the kitchen. In my opinion the three most noteworthy features of this kitchen is that it is an eat-in kitchen, it is very sunny because it points south, and it has a lot of cabinet storage. An-eat in kitchen is not very common on Capitol Hill and to make a point of it we have installed a nice glass top table and four chairs which, if you chose, you can retain and use so you do not have to bother getting your own. I might also point out that it is a stainless steel kitchen (not uncommon for the HIll) with a large capacity refrigerator and freezer (surprisingly uncommon on the Hill) and a handsome 5 burner stove. I do not understand why a fifth burner is important for a stove but my wife said that it is convenient for cooking and classy looking so I installed a 5 burner stove as if I had a choice in the matter.

After the kitchen we walk out the kitchen glass door onto the porch which is your private porch, which is very sunny because it points south and which looks down upon a lovely patio and garden.

Speaking of a patio and garden, that is our next stop. You share that with us. The nice thing about sharing is that the patio furniture is already there so you do not have to go to the bother and expense of getting your own, and those patio chairs are the most comfortable I have ever experienced in my life which is why I bought them.

This is about all a I can it into this highly confined space. Feel free to call for my website that provides much more detail and we can even set a time for an apartment viewing if you like. We should talk on the telephone first so I can answer any questions you might have or elaborate a little further if necessary. Call the telephone number on this site. If you get my message service simply leave your telephone number and best time to call back. I am OK with calling evenings before 9 PM if that turns out to be the best time for you. My name is Jeffrey Barrett so when you see that name on your caller ID screen you will know I am not a pesky telemarketer.
