5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI was a student here, a long time ago. I am now in a better position in life and want to give back to the place that helped forge me into the person I am today. Avalon Gardens played a large role in who I am today. I call the school, talk to the principle who seems like she is not a very friendly person, about donating, and finding out how I can help give back to the school. This woman tells me that her priority is to get electronic "chalk" boards in the classrooms. I looked these boards up online, they are starting at $8,000. I mean, aren't there more pressing materials kids need, other than another screen to look at. I was fortunate to make it to adulthood living in south central, unlike my classmate Khye Johnson and the countless others we lost, and I will give back in my own way. HOWEVER, I CAN TELL THE PRINCIPLE HAS NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE AMONGST THE PEOPLE. We gotta break this vicious cycle of allowing people who can't relate to us, to teach our children. Electronic chalk boards, give me a break. No wonder the scores are where they are. My name is Charell Williams.Parent Review12y ago - Gardena Senior High School

What Locals Say about Los Angeles

"Limited sidewalks and street lighting at night. I rarely walk or stroll around in the area and drive everywhere. A few restaurants and a coffee shop is walkable, about 15 minutes on near Wilshire."

"Car traffic due to alt freeway entrances has become dangerous for walking or biking. Some vandalism exists. "

"I grew up here, and it feels very much like home. The traffic is minimal, there’s both high and lower end shops, and it’s incredibly safe and quiet."

"Venice is unique and eclectic with wonderful restaurants and a fun nightlife. It’s a great place for young people. "

"Very walkable streets and high dog population neighborhood. Lots of people out walking in the evenings on a nice day, many with baby strollers, dogs or both."
- Adam Harman

"We moved to this neighborhood as a predominate work-from-home location. It’s a good community with lots of lot space where even in heavy commuter traffic you can get to the west side in ~45 mins. This feels especially satisfying compared to further out communities that people go for similar space but require 1-1.5 hour commutes each way."
- Adam Harman

"Neighborhood has yearly events, such as a holiday get together and the area draws a lot of people for Halloween festivities. There’s a number of young families that have come into the area in the past couple years and there’s good above average interaction and playtime amongst them, compared to other areas of Los Angeles from experience."

"I mostly commute by car or bicycle. There are glstretts with sidewalks and many trees, quite area to walk with dogs. Also, Lake Balboa and VNSO within 10min drive. I like Sherman Oaks "

"A few good parks for dogs at the periphery of the neighborhood, many dog lovers. However sidewalks disappear at critical moments making walking with a dog treacherous and there's some big dog phobia here (same as many parts of LA) "

"I lived in this neighborhood for over a year. The weekends are loud you can hear music being played from houses down the street. Not walkable at all. Huge dogs everywhere and doesn’t feel the safest. Pretty dirty and unmaintained. Closest grocery store is a food for less which is dirty and not where I would want to buy my groceries."
